Spam comments

  1. My blog is receiving a lot of spam in the comments section. These comments are being pushed to the emails of some of my followers--as if new content has been published. Please help, I don't want my followers to think I am intentionally spamming them.

The blog I need help with is goteamtyler.com.

  2. I'm having the same problem today. (scottiechronicles.com).

Any idea why and what, if anything, can be done about it? Thanks.

  3. The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.

The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It's removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened.

On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click "empty spam" and you don't even have to click "empty spam" if you don't want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it's spam.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam and Akismet is handling your spam correctly. Please don't brood about this. For more information please take the time to read "5 things every blogger should know about spam" on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/

  4. Thanks, that's helpful, and I've been flagging the comments for removal.

Any idea why these comments are being pushed to my followers emails?

  5. These comments are being pushed to the emails of some of my followers--as if new content has been published.

How can that happen via your blog, when you moderate comments and approve every comment posted to your blog?

You don't have to require a log-in or an email address from commenters, but if you don't then you have flung doors to your blog wide open to spammers. See more on that at the end of my comment please.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That's easy to do. You copy and paste this into a text widget:

Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

P.S. Do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. "An administrator must always approve the comment" because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.

  6. Any idea why these comments are being pushed to my followers emails?

I think the spammers are simply targeting your commenters blogs
the same as they target yours.

  7. Doubtful, as the follower who notified me of this problem doesn't have a blog, and the spam (comments on old posts) that she is receiving is coming from my blog.

  8. Ah ha! I've been "unapproving" these comments and marking them as spam. Thanks very much. Good info.

  9. Maybe you bloggers ought to report what's happening directly to Akismet Staff. Here's the contact link > http://akismet.com/contact/
