   Erh, I was just looking at my Akismet filter. I have a bunch of spams from "d%%s_test%%%@hotmail.com", what's unusual is that several of the spams are logged with an IP address of 192.168.x.x, e.g.

   life insurance | [email redacted] | lifeinsurance.iMegastores.com#0 | IP: 192.168.4.80
   life insurance | [email redacted] | lifeinsurance.iMegastores.com#0 | IP: 192.168.2.4

   (spam text not included).

   while others are real looking IPs

   whole life insurance | [email redacted] | fun.to/wholelifeinsurance#0 | IP: 66.246.82.114

   This seems to suggest something on the internal wordpress.com network has been botnetted, or that someone at WordPress is testing something?

   No botnetted :)

   There was a brief period where some backend stuff had to changed and for that time the wrong information was attached.
   The spam did come from outside.
