Spam Problem

    I've got a spammer that has incessantly been posting comments that are not filtered by the spam filter. Comments invariably follow the same pattern. Each is from [bad word], with email [bad word]@[bad word].com, and the comment will be “[bad word]” repeated three times. So far, “bad words” have included the male body part (in three separate comments), a female body part, and the word “whore.” Any idea what this is and why it's not being filtered? I'm having to monitor my email (for notification of new "comment") and manually remove the lewd material.

    The blog I need help with is foreignaffairslaw.wordpress.com.

    My Dashboard > Settings > Discussion then add those bad words to the 'Comment Blacklist' box, one word per line. You can even add his own IP. Next time he posts a comment, have a look at his IP and add it to that box in order for his comments to be marked as spam.

    @swiftpoint what you have here is not technically a spammer, but a troll. It's an individual who is posting nuisance comments on your blog and nowhere else. That's why they're not being caught by Akismet.

    You can use keyword blocking as leetgamer says (but be aware of the scunthorpe problem) or an IP block might work.

    A more general solution would be to use some of the comment moderation features on your blog, in particular "Users must be registered and logged in to comment".

    I've had some success at dealing with trolls by editing their comments and pasting in their IP and their email. If you can find their real names, use that too. It certainly stopped the Church of Scientology from trolling my site once they knew I'd out them.

    And, of course, you can edit the comment to make the poster look very stupid, depending on how much time you have and how much you love internet drama.
