Stats counts on Posts

  1. I had put this in feedback quite a while ago wanted to do so once more but it looks like support is closed for the weekend.

    Problem
The posts dont indicate the correct total stats count over a period.

I know for sure as some posts are made specifically for the illustration site http://illustrationfriday.com 90% of the hits that i get for that day and the next are usually from this site and for a particular post but when i view the total count for that post the figure differs widely from the actual totals that i can see based on visits from the site.

is this a known problem? can i do something to get my post count to tally?

    Thank you,

    Ujwala

  2. Volunteers on the forum can't answer this question. Your best bet is to send in a feedback on Monday to get the details.

This is the only general info we have http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/02/09/questions-about-stats/
    http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/01/03/blog-stats/

Did you know you can also have a free stats counter? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/28/can-i-have-a-statcounter-on-my-blog/
    http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/20/how-do-i-add-a-counter-using-a-widget/

  3. thanks timethief. i had a look at the information you've put up and it doesnt cover my problem. I have put up a statcounter (sitemeter) on my blog already. that doesnt give counts for individual posts. wp.com does. I think it was great addition but I wish it would work. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

What follows is somewhat of a rant.
Wordpress is a very young company. From what I can see our coding staff are under continuous pressure to bring forward cutesy little myspace musical and video doodads and snappy features for those, who prefer playing with entertaining gadgets to creating written blog content.

It's difficult to create a balance within a mileu of endless adolescent requests for more doodads that I consider to be "toys". More difficult still is trying to develop a young company, within the larger consumer driven sandbox society, where a person's import is predicated on how many shiny toys and useless but entertaining gadgets they possess.

So the bottom line is: when wordpress staff time is spent on the creation of knicknacs then it seems it cannot be spent on functionality improvements and program development. And that's where I would like to see staff time focused.

There is however, hope on the horizon and I am optimistic about the stats program. On February 4th, Andy, who created the stats program and who is continuing develop it said: "You guys are so hooked on stats... I can't wait until April! Something very big is happening to your stats in April".

  5. I don't think it's inappropriate to expect that the services WordPress offers to their users simply work. If the stat count for the day isn't greater than or equal to the sum of the stats for each individual post, then something is quite wrong and needs to be fixed. I think that staff would appreciate a feedback about the issue, and I do not think that the expectation that this be fixed is an "adolescent request for knicknacks."

As Andy said, stats are important to people, and WordPress does the best it can to meet the needs of its users; when something is broken, they need to know about it because they are good enough to care that WordPress function the way it should. We can all agree that this is a good thing.

  6. @rain
Unfortunately you completely misunderstood me. I do not classify stats programs that work in the same group of what I call "doodads" at all, at all.

"I don't think it's inappropriate to expect that the services WordPress offers to their users simply work either." I concur with your statement.

I also heartily agree with: "if the stat count for the day isn't greater than or equal to the sum of the stats for each individual post, then something is quite wrong and needs to be fixed."

"I think that staff would appreciate a feedback about the issue..." I heartily agree with this too and I do not think that the expectation that this be fixed is an "adolescent request for knicknacks" Well, neither do I, rain.

  7. Okay, sorry about that. I'm very good at completely misunderstanding things before I've had my coffee.

  8. @rain
Actually I'm apologizing for not being more clear in the first place. I'm also hoping the OP didn't misunderstand me too. :(

  9. But anyway...

Since it's monday, I'd go ahead and send in a feedback and point this out to staff with any specifics that you may have like counts.

The only thing I can think of right off is I believe wp.com's counting system is javascript based and, if your visitor had turned that off, it wouldn't show up. (Another reason why I'm not big on having Google Analyics/ Urchin here.) Most stat systems on hosters elsewhere are pulling directly from the webserver logfiles.

  10. timethief - i didnt misunderstand :D

dr mike - i have done so two times already and I guess I'll wait till April if I dont hear from them earlier :D Somehow the count tallies for the posts dont match from screen to screen.

thank you all for taking the time to write back. had a b'day and that's my excuse for not stopping by earlier.

    thank you all.

  11. I wonder if some of these hits might be spam and thus counted as a hit on a post but taken OUT of reconing for total hits and put in the spam category instead; in other words, spam hits are subtracted from total hits but not from hits on a post. But we're speculating: it'll be twelve hours at least till anyone from WordPress is back to regular work.

  12. Have sent feedback once more today. Let us see.
