Stats not adding up ..

My blog stats aren't adding up since past two days.

The blog I need help with is stilldaddyslittlegirl.wordpress.com.

  2. Adding up to what? Exactly what are you reporting please?

Please do not assume that everyone who clicks a like button actually reads the post on your blog because odds are they may not.

Also note that those who follow your blog in the Reader or by email don't have to click into the blog unless they wish to.

Likes and shares and comments and reblogs and follows are not page views. In fact, likes, shares, comments and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com/Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can "follow" your blog, "like", "share" and "reblog" your posts in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat.

Logged in visitors using a mobile can read the full post without creating a page view stat. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373606

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading. Choose the "summary" setting for your RSS feed rather than to "full text". That will compel followers who are not using mobiles to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

Our stats are not real time stats. For details see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/ and note the views and viewers take hours to update.

    The number of views!!
The number of views shown by WordPress Stats and Statcounter is totally different. Why so?
I realise that all my posts may not be read and I already make sure to choose the length of the summary. The problem arose when I checked my stats on Statcounter and found a striking difference between the two.

  4. The number of views shown by WordPress Stats and Statcounter is totally different. Why so?

Sitemeter, Statcounter, WordPress.com stats and all the others will never agree. Each one of them decides how and what they will count as a hit. Some like WordPress.COM count page views and some count unique visitors. Therefore, use any of the stats counters only as a general guide to hits. Also note that no third party stat counter you place in a widget can possibly record all activity on your blog.

Understand that an application that is not running on the same servers your blog is on is going to be susceptible to wild fluctuations. This is because all hits have to be transferred over the internet to different servers, and there are literally thousands of things that can go wrong between the server your blog is on and the server at the stats place.

Also be aware of the possibility that the software or hardware at the stats place may be broken and not recording, or counting things as intended.

Even different counters running on the same server have some divergence -

True :) but I wanted to be sure that stilldaddyslittlegirl understands that the statcounter in the widget is not embedded into the template of the blog. None of the third party tracking programs can be embedded into the <header> on any WordPress.COM blog.

I have tagged this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  8. Also Statcounter will not count views when you are looking at the pictures in a Gallery that opens up the gray background and you flip from image to image - found that out with the last Post on a tour of an Icebreaker - have 45 pictures of the Healy and the Gallery views did not get counted at Statcounter

  9. Yes, I'm aware of that too. :)

    Okay
    Thank you

  11. @stilldaddyslittlegirl-

    Hi there,

Please note that our volunteers here are correct. You can only use HTML stat counters on WordPress.com (not the Javascript one) which will always be less accurate as you don't have access to all of the information. We don't allow this for security reasons.

Also please note that all stat counters measure different things, so unless it's purely a coincidence, they will not show the same numbers. It's best to use these counters as a general guide as @timethief mentioned to which posts are generally getting more hits than other posts.

    Cheers!
