On one of my blogs, a tiny smiley face :) has appeared on the upper right hand corner. It wasn't there yesterday. Where on earth could this have come from?

Strangest Thing

I checked out your blog and didn't see it where you described it. Instead it was at the bottom center of the page.
-
It's on all WordPress blogs, on all pages if I recall correctly. It has something to do with helping WordPress itself track hits or something. If you want to look for it, you'll see it everywhere; it's our own little "Nina". In fact, I suggest we call it "Nina".
-
Actually it looks brain dead. I vote we call it Angela after my ex. :)
-
*rotflmbo* good one drmike;)
-
@iago68: Ha it is still in the right hand corner on mine. Are you using IE? Maybe it's position on mine is because I am using Firefox.
@raincoaster, thanks ... I was wondering if I was losing my mind. Strange I never noticed it before.
@drmike that is hilarious. :)
I guess it is kind of like a car ... we have to name it after a female. LOL.
@timethief Haha.
-
Okay, for future reference. I went to work on a post, and realized my blue bar was gone... I wasn't logged in ... not sure why as I didn't log out. So I logged in and presto ... it's gone. Mystery solved.
-
Staff has mentioned that when you're logged in and viewing your blog, hits don't count. That's probably why you don't see it. We believe the smilely is part of the tracking system..
-
Interestingly enough the protection package on my machine does such a "good job" that I can't see the angela spying on me *lol* OOPS! I don't really mean spying I mean tracking my statistics, of course. ;D
-
Probably wouldn't work either if Javascripts were turned off as well. Ditto for Urchin/ Google Analyics as well.
-
Ahhhh yes but did anyone tell wordpress.com bloggers this ... hmmm...? Perhaps some of the bloggers who are perpetually concerned about the accuracy of their statistics need this information.
-
I am usually logged in (I am on the computer waaaay too much), but you have to be when you have four blogs,;) and my views have been increasing. However I did notice one day that didn't see to have as many views, said on blog stats that it was my best day ever ... although according to the views it looked like it had been a couple of days before that.
I understood in regards to stats, it was intended that your own visits didn't count as hits, yet other hits could still be counted.
Glad we're being tracked, otherwise how would you even know if anyone is visiting. :)
The other strange thing is all of a sudden I have to keep logging in, when I didn't have to before ... no wonder I keep seeing Angela ... not sure if that has been covered or not.
I figured that you can see her when you are not logged in, but she is still there when you are logged in, but you just can't see her! LOL. If that makes any sense at all. -
exactly - angie is always lurking and working - don't take fright- sign in and you won't see her - sign out and you might
-
Nice Rhyme, TT. :)
-
Perhaps Angela is the ghost of deleted blogs? That would explain why she haunts us so. How terribly sad: deleted, yet unable to pass on until the Wayback Machine wipes the record.
-
good one *rotflombo*
-
Perhaps Angela is the ghost of deleted blogs
That's giving her too much credit.
-
The vengeful revenant, out for blood?
-
nah! not blood - it's clicks and $$ that angie feeds on - for her it's all in the numbers
-
Just in case anyone gets tired of angie, she'll walk out on you if you put this in your "style.css" file:
img#wpstats{width:0px;height:0px;padding:0px;border:none;overflow:hidden}
:)
-
But doing that will probably utterly bork your stats, as Angie Sightings is what they are actually counting. Depends what you want; do you want it to look good, or do you want to know what your readers are reading and how many you've got. If I'm interpreting the implications correctly (correct me if you KNOW I'm wrong) you will also be out of the running for Top Blogs, Top Posts, and Growing Blogs, as those are at least partly stats influenced.
-
raincoaster,
That piece of CSS, if I am reading it correctly, will just hide angie - she will still be called, you will just not see her.
I might try it to see if it does "bork" the stats. -
I don't know why they can't just use a blank spacer gif like normal people. Everyone using the stats plugin knows that an image is being served and monitored, so it doesn't have to be visible.
-
heh heh "Angie sightings" :)
I'd have to go find the link but there is a bit of css that staff has been recommending to remove seeing the face.
-
The CSS from zetrindade above works nicely - no angie and stats still operational.
-
Cool, thanks for the update. I was getting it confused with another thread where someone removed it entirely.
-
So Angie's in hiding and waiting to strike?
Sounds about right....
-
@drmike ;)
angie's always lurking and working - don't take fright
sign in and you won't see her - sign out and you mightyou can cover her up with css - if you must
but she'll still be lurking - in that you can trust -
If you use Adblock Plus, that handy addon to our favorite browser, Firefox, you will get this (or a similar) URL for the smiley:
So indeed, http://stats.wordpress.com/g.gif is a way to generate statistics for blog pages (like which theme you are using etc).
-
I just changed templates and it shows near the top of the blogroll.
