I'm very new to this, and I'm trying to figure out how people can subscribe to my blog if they're not on wordpress...I want my friends and family to be able to subscribe so they get an email saying there's a new entry with a link to click...how do I set that up!

    Help!!

    Thanks!!

  2. First off, could we get a link to your blog please?

  3. I have the same/similar question -- what I want to put on the left column of my blog is that little orange & white logo with the word "Subscribe" next to it. I am new to blogging so my understanding of the language is somewhat limited! Your help navigating through this would be most appreciated.

  4. Aha! I may have been searching in the wrong place. Thank you for posting that link....

  5. Simply send your readers your RSS feed. They can then subscribe to it. Your RSS feed is your blog address plus /feed.
This way, every time you update your blog, your readers will get an update.

In most updated web browsers, surfers can subscribe right from their browser by clicking the orange RSS icon.

  6. I'm not winning. Pls assist! http://jerryinjozi.wordpress.com/

  7. Could you be more specific about how you're losing?

  8. I follow the instructions from http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/put-your-feed-in-your-sidebar/ but when I add the text widget I don't see any "blue lines", only "edit", which I click on. I then see an assumed subject line space, and a body. I enter the following in the subject: <img src=”image-location” /> I don't understand where to insert the image link for the rss feed icon.
I want them to be able to subscribe from the webpage, not the windows task bar.

Forgive me, this is all new to me, I'm probably missing the plot somewhere, but I'd appreciate the assistance!

  9. Perhaps you need to start with understanding what a text widget is. http://support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/

  10. I can see how the faq is not entirely clear -- do you know any basic HTML? That will help you here.

Type the code or copy and paste this:

    <img src="image-location"/>

in the BODY of the text widget. (The code supplied in the FAQ has an extra space lodged after the image src, so don't copy that.)

Remove "your-blog-name" and type in your blog's name (i.e. "jerryinjozi")

Scroll down and look at the images for the RSS feed. Maybe you like big and blue. Maybe you like little and pink. Whichever image/icon you like, copy the "http://..." code next to it.

Replace "image-location" with the code you copied. Keep the quotation marks around it.

Now, if you want to say "Subscribe" or some such language to the right of the icon, write that word after the last bracket in the code.

    Hope this helps.

  11. Whoops! I mean ... don't copy that. Just rewrite the code as listed on the FAQ!

  12. lizzielove - first, you only copied part of it. And second, a blog's name is not just "jerryinjozi"

  13. Thanks all, after much perseverance I came right in the end.

  14. how do i fix the actual feeds page? right now it shows the media files below the abstract. is there a way to remove that information? thanks...

  15. lizzielove and vivianpaige -- thanks. this was a helpful discussion

  16. This is very helpful for a subscribe link, but is there a way for fans of my blog to get an email when I post something new?

  17. Have you looked in the FAQs? Here the link so please bookmark it for future reference http://faq.wordpress.com/
    And here's your answer http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/
    Happy blogging :)

  18. Hi guys,

    Uhm... Why does this happen?
I click to add a text widget.
I click on the blue lines or edit button.
    ...and then it's gone...
    ??

Some of the other widgets are working, but the text field that supposedly should show, just disappears...?

  19. That is not a Wordpress.com blog. You need to read this:

    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

  20. I tried changing to another theme and then it seems to work...
I had the default theme going, also tried various others, but with "Gear" I get a smaaall RSS icon, so I guess that's it? I would have liked to find a simple way to add this RSS Feed to other themes, but as I said before, the text widget field just disappears when I try to edit it...

  21. Did you read that link?

  22. You guys rock. Thank you. Got it first time.

  23. pkunzip: I imagine by now you've solved your problem with the text widget, I had a similar experience myself. But just in case you haven't, add the text widget, save changes, and then click on edit. This worked for me.

However, I have another problem now with the text widget that I need help with. I'm adding an icon to my sidebar for RSS feed subscription. I've followed the instructions from support's "Put your feed in your sidebar" guide, and the link shows up on the page, but the image isn't getting there. When I return to the text widget to check it out, almost all of the information for the img src part is gone except for <img> The original text I entered in the text widget exactly and without copying is:
    <img src=”http://faq.files.wordpress.com/2006/11/a64.png”/>

I type out the code carefully, hit "done," and then hit "save changes," but the image never makes it to the blog page. Help! This is really frustrating me, and yes, I'm a noob and learning.

  24. Arg, I typed out the code for the feed above as well as the code for the image, however, it seems to have just made a link of the think in my post. Plus, what remains of my code for the image in addition to <img> is open bracket, forward slash, a, close bracket. Apologies, again, I am noob.

  25. Thank you, experts, for helping us newbies! I think I followed all the directions & now have a subscribe button but it's at the bottom of my 'recent comments' and has a blue ? icon to the right of it. Can I move the rss icon to a more prominent location &/or eliminate the ? icon?

Still a struggling computer illiterate, but working my way through,
    Linda

  26. Whoops, I asked to soon....just accidentally found how to move the icon, but still haven't figured out how to eliminate the blue ? icon.
