Subscribers not getting notification of updates

    Two of my friends have separately subscribed to my blog a few days ago, but they told me they're not getting email notification of my new posts. I've installed the subscription widget and I think everything is enabled, they believed their subscription was successful, I subscribed and it notifies me when I add a new post (even though I don't need to be told about that, of course). So what's the problem? Do they have to be WordPress members or something?
    Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

    They don't need to be a WordPress.com user.

    Could you ask them to:
    - go to http://subscribe.wordpress.com/ and check their subscription
    - check their junk mailbox
    - add [email redacted] as a safe sender or whitelist user

    You can check active subscribers from your stats page:
