Suburbia theme layout

  1. Hi, I'm having problems with a new blog I've just set up on wordpress.com. I want it to look exactly like the suburbia demo in terms of layout and sidebar categories but it's simply not working. Is there an online guide for the suburbia theme?

The blog I need help with is fernandaviveiros.wordpress.com.

  2. I'm having some trouble with the same theme, Suburbia. I can get it to do everything I want except put widgets in the sidebar.

As for answering your question, I may be able to help a little. If you go to your THEMES page, you should see the SUBURBIA theme at the top with a partial description and then READ MORE ABOUT SUBURBIA. If you haven't already done this, reading this may help you. It did me.

So far I have several "pretend" posts set up, so I can work with layout and see what it looks like. When you include a photo in your post, make sure you click to make it the FEATURED photo and that way it will show up at the very top of your post, just like the demo shows.

To make the top two large, like the demo, you have to do a sticky post on the posts you want to feature. I had to research all this stuff, cause I didn't know how to do it. To do a sticky post, when you are making the post, or editing the post, on the right upper corner is the option Visibility: Public. Click "edit" next to that, then options will appear. Click the box next to "Stick this post to the front page". It will put that post at the top of your homepage and make the photo large like the demo.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Thanks!

Suburbia supports five widget optional areas — four in the footer and one in the sidebar in single post and page views. The far left grid is reserved for page navigation which appears on index and archive view if they have more than one page.

  5. I am having trouble with the Suburbia menu. I have manually resorted it in the Menu area and saved, but when I go back into the site it has ignored this and put items into its own order, this puts the Home page 2/3 of the way down and gives prominence to the wrong material. Does anyone ahve any idea why this is happening, I've never had a problem with menus on other themes.

If you go to Appearance -> Menus, you'll be able to create a menu by giving it a name and clicking "create menu." Then you can drag your pages (which you might see listed in the left column, down a bit) over onto the menu. Once they're all there, you can re-order them by dragging.

For some reason I don't understand, my pages don't always show up there, so I hit "show all," and sometimes they show, and sometimes they don't. Then I search for them using the exact name and then they appear. I don't know what's up with that. Good luck!

  8. Thanks Purplehummingbird. I'd done all that, but stupidly I'd forgotten to put the custom menu name in the selection box on the left side of the Appearance/Menus page! Fixed now, which is good as Suburbia is a nice theme (thank you Automattic), though the use of a different font for bullets gets some quips that I've used the wrong font there!

  10. How do you make sure that ALL your posts show up on the main page? I only have about 15 last posts, and then Navigation link. Is there a setting somewhere how many posts to show?

  11. Yes, that setting is under settings reading.
