Summary Length & Banner

  1. I want to have 10 or so of the most recent blogs on my front page, but not the full posting (as it would make a page which scrolls down forever and ever). How can I get it to stop at, say 150 words, and then link to the full posting.

I found that the answer is Edit your index file and replace the_content with the_excerpt. Stepping_Into_Template_Tags

But I am using the free themes, then how and where I can edit this thing?

Besides, I also want to add a dynamic flash banner on the top of the page to show some photos, how can I do that.

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is sellmyswitch.wordpress.com.

  2. This is a multiuser blogging platform and you cannot access the database in a free hosted WordPress.com blog. What you can do is insert the more tag to split content in posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

The Flash banner is also out. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/#flash-and-other-embeds

There is no upgrade, aside from a VIP hosting upgrade http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ that you can purchase that allows blogger initiated advertising on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. You will have to hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.org install to run your own advertising.

  5. I found that the answer is Edit your index file and replace the_content with the_excerpt. Stepping_Into_Template_Tags

The tutorial and customizations you mentioned (such as adding a flash banner) are things you can do with a WordPress.org setup because it gives you complete control over the code. It sounds like that would be the best solution for you if you want to get in and tinker with the code.
