Switching Domain names from WordPress.com to wordpress.org

  1. I have a question regarding switching from wordpress.com to wordpress.org.

I have a wordpress.com account and I bought the domain name(.com). I now want to use that same domain name on my wordpress.org account. Is there a way to transfer that over to wordpress.org? The reason I am switching is because I would like more opportunities to customize my page.

Any step by step instructions would be helpful as I am clueless about this!

The blog I need help with is caitlynblizzard.com.

  2. First you hire a web host and set up your WordPress.com install. See here > moving a blog Then as you’ve registered your domain through WordPress.com and now want it to point to a blog or website hosted elsewhere you can do this by updating the nameservers.
Domain Mapping » Domain Management » Update Nameservers

  3. Thank you!

Ok so in order to switch them over I have to first purchase the web host and then switch it? When I was in hostgator last night to purchase the web host, it was asking me to put in my domain name if it was already existent. Would this help me at all? I just want to make sure I am doing everything right so I can keep my domain name.

Just want to make sure I am getting the steps right in order to completely switch my wordpress.com DOMAIN name over to wordpress.org.
Step 1. Buy a web host
Step 2. Go to wordpress.org and download the file onto my computer
Step 3: Go through the domain mapping steps to get my wordpress.com to go to wordpress.org (question about this separately: on step 4, is nameserver 2 supposed to be "wordpress.org?")
    4. Download and follow the steps to install the wordpress theme that I purchased.

Thank you very much for your help!

  4. When I was in hostgator last night to purchase the web host, it was asking me to put in my domain name if it was already existent. Would this help me at all?

Of course your new hosting provider needs to know what your domain name is. That's regardless of whether you own that domain name already or you want to purchase it. However, you still need to set up the nameservers, which brings me to...

Step 3: Go through the domain mapping steps to get my wordpress.com to go to wordpress.org (question about this separately: on step 4, is nameserver 2 supposed to be "wordpress.org?")

WordPress.org is NOT your hosting provider. You would enter the nameservers given by your new hosting provider (who, per your previous comments, would be HostGator).
