Switching from .com to .org?

I've had my site for over a year now, overall, I love it. I want to open a estore on the site, so thought if I payed the 17 bucks to register it, I'd be able to use plug-ins, which is what's need for a store. Upon further research, I discovered that I need to have a .org site to support plugins, not a .com. So, I went to the "how to change from .com to .org" walkthrough, which is here...

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#domain-manager-login

I'm stuck on step 2 "Look for Domain Administration and change the password." I don't see any such button :( So, where do I go from here? Is there any way to get people to the site by typing in .com?

    Here's the site in question...

Thanks to all who reply ;)

The blog I need help with is lazybraingames.com.

  2. The codex is for WordPress.org installs. Your domain name that was purchased through WordPress.com must be managed here at WordPress.com. If you have already hired a web hosting service, set up your WordPress.org install, and imported your content and links into it, then the instructions you need to follow to update the nameservers are here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers

  3. You need to hire a host and move your site to the new host - not just change the name. Here is a bit more info on the real differences.

    Thanks for the replies!

Well, this is more work than anticipated, but hey, that's how it goes when you attempt to make money I guess. So, I don't need the domain then?

    Thanks again!

I wondered if the blogger had done that or not.

    @lazybraingames
    Here's a summary of the process http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
    hire web host
get WordPress.org install and set it up
    upload themes and plugins
export content out of WordPress.com blog
    import content into WordPress.org install
    export and import links
    make sure everything is working
    then update the nameservers

  6. ~~TT - thanks for the link for the OP - I need to save it somewhere - I can never seem to find it with the search function in the help documents

PS - keep the mapped domain that you bought - you will need it for people to find your site

    An interesting question...

Could I just keep the .com site, then have people "donate" and receive a "gift" for their donation? Or is that too subversive?

    Thanks!

  8. You can post an unencrypted PayPal donation button on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.

These are all the steps > Setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org install
You will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting. If you install a theme or a plugin that negatively affects your blog, then you have to figure out what went wrong and fix it.

It's my strongly held opinion that if you are not skilled at WordPress.com blogging, and also lack the skill sets required to self host your own WordPress.org install then acquiring that experience and those skills first is the way to go.

Yeah, looks like I'm just going to have to bite the bullet on this one. I went from thinking I could set up a store for 17 bucks to setting up a store for 17+hosting+technical work, so it's been a painful half-hour for me, but those are the breaks!

I think that answers all my questions. Thanks for all the speedy replies everyone!

  10. Too bad you didn't read this section carefully when you purchased your domain mapping upgrade:

    Important Notes Before Upgrading
    Same Terms of Service
    – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not permit the use of any kind of prohibited code or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Yeah, I just didn't even look at the .org part, my eyes just didn't even see it since I wasn't looking for it :P I do, after all, have a very lazy brain ;)

    Thanks again!

  12. You're welcome. :)
