switching over to wordpress from a custom site

  1. Hi everyone,

I have a client who wants to stop using their current custom made site and start using a wordpress site. Short of 'migrating' the site, is there any other way to do this? For example, if I started simply building a wordpress site for them with all of their information on it, and then mapped the domain name of the current site onto this new wordpress site, would that not work? I'm hoping there's a relatively simple solution here. I'm fine with rebuilding the site and all its content, so I'm not worried about losing information or having to start from scratch.

Secondly, there is a member portal attached to the site (the url is portal.theirurl.com) which is managed by a portal management company. Would wordpress support this function? I don't need to change the portal, I just need to make sure that the site can link to it and that there can be a 'join/login' button which will lead to the portal page.

    Any help is appreciated!!

  2. Unless the current site is a WordPress.ORG install any migration or whatever will be by hand, copy and paste - no shortcut to glory - even if you were going to a WordPress.ORG install

You should be able to map the members area as a sub-domain

However the rules here on what you can and can't do with a web site / blog are quite different than on most hosts - so without knowing what your client wants and seeing the site we can't address that -

    So:

You & your client should review the TOS before you get too far along:

    http://en.wordpress.com/tos/
    http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/suspended-blogs/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/

  3. I don't see anything in the TOS that would be a concern...?

the site is http://www.amwa-doc.org. I'm trying to figure out if instead of 'migrating' the site (as shown here: http://www.matthewhooper.com/static-site-to-wordpress/), I can simply go into wordpress, build them a site and manually copy over all of the information (it has a few pages of blog posts etc but definitely nothing like years and years of regular posts, so it's mostly just information pages) and then simply mapping their domain to the wordpress site. so that when people input the url, it will take them to this wordpress site.
