Tab and wordwrap issues pasting from Word

I am working on a novel and would like to start posting sections of it on my wordpress. For some reason the tabs do not show up in the formatting. Instead, there is no indent on the first line and there is a break between paragraphs. I used the paste as plain text option and tried adding the tabs with actual spaces but they disappear in the final formatting. I also tried the paste from word and more formatting shenanigans, this time some tabs showed up but most did not, again with breaks after each paragraph and no indent on the first line. I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere as I am not familiar with the wordpress forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The blog I need help with is jaredhallstrom.wordpress.com.

  2. Microsoft WORD is not web compliant. http://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/ For copying and pasting text from WORD use icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
    See also http://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/#using-word-cleanly

  3. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/

If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.

If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/09/13/wordpress-formatting-and-spacing/

P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It's in the Visual editor Row 2 first position "style". See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

I do not want a space between each paragraph. I want no space between each paragraph and an indent on the first line of every paragraph. I want it to look like its being read right out of the novel.

  5. an indent on the first line of every paragraph

There is no simple way to do this. You would have to use the HTML (Text) editor and code in the indentation on every paragraph.

this trick worked for this blog! Thank you so much! the code proposed in the post achieved the formatting I was seeking. Now is there any way to do this without breaks between paragraphs?

P.S. This is my personal feedback. I'm visually challenged and if you remove the blank spaces between paragraphs on any blog than I see a block of text that is so stressful to focus on and read that I click out and never click in again.

That is actually entirely fair. I believe I will keep the spaces for that reason. I hate long writing that is forwarded to me because it is tedious and takes an indeterminable amount of time. It IS a blog after all. I'm guessing the text editor will not recognize individual paragraphs solely on formatting alone as the code depends on the breaks between paragraphs to allow the indent on each paragraph. At least for now I think I will be content. If there is a way to post more novel-like formatting in the future it would be wonderful!

  9. Okay. I've blogged for years so I don't expect to see indented paragraphs and I have no intention of coding every indent into my blogs. You may want to think about this > http://en.support.wordpress.com/prevent-content-theft/ Best wishes with your blog.
