tag count increased, but I don’t use them

I do not and have not added tags to any posts. I have 8 categories, and so on my blog stats page, it said I also had 8 tags. I assumed that came from that WP used the words “tag” and “category” at one time interchangeably. Some time in the last few days (I really wasn’t paying close attention to this detail) my number of tags increased to 9. Now today it says I have 27 tags. As far as I understand from searching the forums, there is no way to see what these mysterious 27 tags are. Should I be concerned about this?
I have clicked “edit” on some more recent posts to see if something has appeared, and do not see anything in the field where tags would be added. No tags appear on the posts from the reader’s point of view. Everything seems to be as it always was.
If it was just a system-wide bug on the stats page, I expected to see people panicking about it in the forums :oP but I haven’t seen anything about it here either. And yes, I have read the FAQ “The difference between…”
So if I can’t find/manage them, I therefore can’t remove them…. if they even exist, since I didn’t add them… should I just learn to love the number 27 on my stats page? Have a philosophical debate whether if a tag appears in a forest of blogs, and no one is there to see it, does it have a function?

As these mystery “tags” are not appearing at the bottom of the posts it seems you will have to contact staff if you want these tags removed.

I just noticed that as well. Apparently I have 31 tags although I never used them.
I’ll send a support question on Monday or after the holidays. Very odd.

That’s truly weird. We can manage our categories but we can’t manage tags. Worse still, tags that you have not used and cannot manage are now appearing on your posts. This is definitely a matter for staff. The xmas support hours are here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=19355

More fun clues for the curious: tag count increased from 27 to 36 after saving another post as a draft; another three posts saved as drafts brought the total to 40. There is no correlation between a post and the number of mystery tags given to it, nor to draft/published status; publishing a draft does not seem to result in more mystery tags, they seem to be “assigned” only either the first time I click “save” or possibly at some point upon auto-save during the first write-up– which is a really convoluted way of saying they don’t seem to increase upon subsequent edits.

Thanks for posting more details. There are staff working 24-7 and they do monitor these threads so hopefully they will come along and “fix” this annoyance soon.
