Tags and Categories

  1. Hi Everyone,

I've been blogging for a year and a half and like many a newbie I made a right hash of choosing my Tags and Catagories when I started, just adding things all over the place and now it's a mess.

If I understand correctly then tags are keywords that describe the content of my blog post and that the categories are like a general global summary like chapter headings...

If I'm doing a review of a restaurant that we are visiting in Portugal, tags might be : Food, Restaurant, Review, (the place name), (specialty dish name) Portugal

I'm assuming that those are the words that people might type into a search engine in order to find my blog post.

My question is about what to put in the Categories then?

just Food, Restaurant, Portugal? .... or???..(suggestions welcome)

Do search engines use my Categories as well as my tags as keywords to search?

I want to update my Categories ... clearly I will have to delete a multitude of too similar ones and band them together under one better thought-out heading, if I delete them off the blog post will that have effect in the search engine?

I want to tidy up, but not make a second mess in doing so.

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is kiwidutch.wordpress.com.

  2. Well, actually the distinction between Tags and Categories at WordPress.com is entirely arbitrary. They work exactly the same. You can restructure the hierarchy if you want, but it'll make no difference to search engines if something is a Category or a Tag.

  3. Thanks Raincoaster...
I appreciate the information very much :)
I can now start simplifying my categories so that they are less messy,
    Cheers!
