Tags not working?

  • About a half hour ago I published a new post with five tags. The post is not showing up in any of the categories I tagged. This is the second time this has happened with a newly published post in the last few months. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your help!

  • I have a similar problem. I could see my published post under the correct tags initially. I then added another few additional tags, after I had published my post and now I cannot see my post under any of the tags. WordPress still reports that my post was published.
    I would appreciate your advice.

  • @sjyoder
The Categories/Tags on your post are among the most popular Topics. As there are millions of us WordPress.com bloggers publishing hundreds of thousands even millions of posts 24 hours daily every day I think the display under the most popular Topics is randomized. In fact, I cannot imagine why it would not be randomized.

  • I have just removed some categories and tags from my last post so that the total is less than 15. Problem solved.

Many thanks for your help timethief.

  • You’re welcome but do be aware that it will take several days for your posts to begin to display on the Topics page after your remove excessive tags.

I strongly encourage all bloggers not to rely only on traffic from the Topics pages which is a negligible flow at best. The flow of traffic from Google and other search engines is what one ought to be focused on.

These 5 videos introduce how Google discovers, crawls, indexes your site’s pages, and how Google displays them in search results. It also touches lightly upon challenges webmasters and search engines face, such as duplicate content http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/22/5google-webmasters-video-tutorials/

If you are using a WordPress.com theme good SEO is a given. However, going beyond the theme what the blogger has done within that structure is worth evaluating. Whether you write informative, persuasive or controversial content learning how search engines work, and how to apply basic SEO to you content will benefit your blog as it will increase traffic from targeted readers. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/10/21/two-seo-videos-for-bloggers/

When it comes to effective social networking I follow raincaoster’s advice and encourage all bloggers to get personal ie. get rid of impersonal auto-posting and start posting manually. The most effective way to promote your posts via social media and social networks is to post unique snippets and links manually to each site.

  • Thanks for you help and insight. In retrospect, I think I should have worded my question differently. I follow my own blog (just so that I can make sure it publishes when I push the button). My last post did not show up in my reader. This concerned me because if it’s not showing up in my reader, then it probably isn’t showing up in my followers’ readers either. That’s what led me to see if my post had appeared in any of the Topics I tagged. It hadn’t. The interesting thing is that the post did show up in a Google reader bundle on another website and also in my husband’s e-mail inbox. It just doesn’t seem to be showing up internally on WordPress. Am I making any sense? I’ll readily admit that I have a very limited understanding of the technical aspects involved in this. Any more insight would be helpful.
