Technorati Meltdown

  1. Google started updated PR a day and a half ago, btw. No grrrs here about that!

@ rain - very important question and I know you'll know the answer. I just changed themes for my self hosted blog (even created a favicon out my apples avatar!) and I'm tinkering with the css. I notice my tags, which had been invisible before, are now displaying in this theme, even above the categories.

Before I get rid of the tags - should I keep them visible? Is there any benefit, bot crawl-wise, to leaving them there?

  2. updated=updating sigh

  3. Actually, while I'm heartened by your confidence, I have no idea. I looked at tags, realized they gave me no googlejuice, and said "Screw 'em". I've never bothered to learn anything about them whatsoever.

Every time a word occurs on your blog, however, you do get potential googlejuice for that term, so in that sense tags are useful. Whether or not externally hosted tags are also technorati tags, i do not know.

  4. Thanks, rain. Technorati treats my categories as T tags.

Since my tags are now visible and since they function as a cross-index or supplemental index (I've always used them as subcategories) I'm going to winnow them down for the benefit of my readers. Screw the search engines; I'll just make sure to work into my copy more terms that might have been a tag. I'll probably end up with more focused posts, which isn't a bad thing!

  5. Kind of a weird question, but is there any way to LOWER your Technorati standing...or any way (after the fact) to remove archives they may still be showing?

  6. Change your URL? Then your old URL starts dropping off a cliff in Technorati terms.

  7. I didn't thik you cold change your url...isn't that carved in stone?

  8. ...sorry...and actually, I have even deleted a few of the blogs that still show up on technorati, with text

  9. You can change your url via the domain upgrade. What happens is Technorati sees the old and new URLs as two completely different blogs, and people start linking to the new one instead of the old one, resulting in the new one starting off at, say 1.5millionth in the ranking and going up. The old one starts to drop, since nobody's linking to hit anymore.

  10. You'll want to check your Technorati status. Technorati now tells me there are zero incoming links to my blog. And this does not take me to my happy place.

  11. You mean your authority is zero? Mine's 85, a drop of about 15 from its peak. I suspect it will soon be zero though, since nobody's linked to me in ages.

  12. And technorati is currently down again.

    Sheesh.

  13. Second raincoaster: use hitwise!

  14. No, it kept my Authority at 202 but shows zero incoming links. These are obviously contradictory. It's deeply, deeply broken.

  15. Authority: 44

    Rank: 218,928

    *crawling back up*

  16. Well it has to be borked. I hadn't been there in a long while, and so after reading this, went to log in and check my rank. Within ten minutes of each try, I got two totally different results. The first try, my rank was 5,660 with an authority of 610. The second try, my authority hadn't changed, but my rank was now 9,034. I have a screen cap to prove that available here.

I then tried again, and got the original 5,660 again.

I tried to change my tagline to the one I've been using recently (Sometimes, all you need is one good frac.) but no matter how many times I checked and refreshed and re-logged in after saving changes, the dang thing still shows the tagline I used when I signed up. I've since had a different one between that one and the new one, so what they heck?

Also, when I added someone to my favorites, I then got a blank screen with the apology telling us that there's a bug and people who have high numbers of favorites (I don't, have onl 32) won't be able to see their list until the glitch is fixed... maybe in a few weeks.

    A few weeks?

    Borked. No other explanation.

  17. Yes, I don't even think they're trying anymore. It's shocking how bad it is. And a shame, because the internet could use something like Technorati, only one that worked.

  18. Glad I found this thread. Been having all sorts of problems with Technorati not updating. Looks like they fixed it - for now. (But then again, I thought the same thing last month.) I've got an authority of 145 and a rank of 37,670. I'll be watching this.

Oh and an FYI - the DNC used Technorati rankings as a part of their blogger pool selection process. Think they had any clue the system was borked? (The 2nd largest VA political blog has a Technorati authority of 125!)

Am I reading correctly that I should turn on "Possibly related posts"? I hope

  19. (um - that should have been - I hope NOT

  20. You just gave me an Idea. I'm going to check and see if they are "follow" or "no-follow" links, ie ones T counts or ones it doesn't, like links left in comments. BRB.

  21. Alrighty then. It LOOKS like they're regular links, unless I'm quite mistaken (which would not be the first time). That means if you're in the P-R-L system, you are getting extra, full-strength links that Technorati counts.

Here are some on a Lolebrity post:

    <div style="margin-top: 1em" class="possibly-related"><hr /><p><strong>Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)</strong></p><ul><li><a rel='related' href='http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman/article1173826.ece#OTC-RSS&ATTR=Woman'>Is Posh or Paris style queen?</a></li><li><a rel='related' href='http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2008/05/16/black.paris.perfume.cnn'>Paris Hilton charms London</a></li><li><a rel='related' href='http://www.thefashionpolice.net/2008/05/paris-hilton.html'>Strange Shorts: Paris Hilton tries a new trend</a></li><li><a rel='related' href='http://www.snarkygossip.com/2008/05/22/paris-hilton-wants-a-baby-in-2009'>Paris Hilton wants a baby in 2009</a></li></ul></div></div> </div>

  22. Oh, you make the babby Jebus cry, Matt. NONE of those links are to WordPress.com blogs. They are ALL to mainstream media sites, or D-list media sites.

  23. Right, it was an experiment. I'm taking it off lolebrity. And going back through ALL my blogs, even the non-updated ones, and taking it off.

  24. rain - are you sure that comments are no-follow (and don't count for T)? I just looked at my own links in and a couple of comments that I left on your blog are showing up in my list of links.

As for the PRP - I turned mine off once I couldn't figure out how to mask those not on my blog.

  25. Comments links show in Google, but they don't count in Technorati, nor do they count to calculate pagerank, apparently. If they did, that would reward link comment spammers, right? That's why the no-follow was invented in teh first place. Google can see them, but they don't use them to calculate your pull is how I understand it.

For awhile there the Comment Widget displayed our blognames as FOLLOW links (while nofollow in the comments themselves), and dear god that was sweet; I've never seen a more powerful incentive for people to comment on WP.com blogs. Unfortunately I mentioned that to staff and hte next thing I know it was kilt. Might those be the comments that show up in Technorati? Ones from late last year?

  26. No, they were recent ones. (This one)

  27. vivian - I just took a peek at the HTML for the PRP on one of my posts that showed links to my blog and to two others (all on wp.com), and there's no way to distinguish them with CSS - I suspect deliberately, since they provide appropriate class attributes on so many other things. The one thing that I did notice is that the entire div has a class assigned to it that doesn't appear anywhere else in the page... with all that that entails about CSS control of the div.

  28. Proof that Technorati is b0rked: raincoaster has higher authority but lower rank than me. That makes no sense.

  29. Hmmm, maybe I should spend more time commenting?

  30. Wait, Vivian: Technorati might be counting your appearance in the THREAD, not in the comments section. That would be "follow" I think. If so, everybody in that thread owes me!

Yes, my authority has been falling, but still pretty high. My rank has been dropping through a trapdoor.

Archie's authority is halfway to quadruple digits, but his ranking isn't that high. It's strange.
