Technorati tip 4 blog pimpin'

  1. FYI, Technorati is now counting our appearances in the Recent Comments widget as LINKS to our blogs from other blogs. The comments themselves don't count, but the appearance in the sidebar DOES.

This is major. Major, major, major. Thank god I'm such a big mouth!

No idea if it works for those who aren't avatarded, though.

  2. If we comment on our own blogs or other's blogs and if they/we have the recent comment widget?

  3. It doesn't count your comments on your blogs. That's what makes me think it's deliberate on WP.com's part. That would have taken some tinkering.

It's if they have the recent comment widget and it's on someone else's WP.com blog.

Archie just confirmed it works for him too; he was wondering where he got the boost!

  4. Schweet! Too bad I really need to get to work on a project I scheduled for 4 weeks and only have 1.5 left to work in. Otherwise, I'd go out and comment more.

  5. I also just confirmed the benefit only extends to WordPress bloggers. No idea yet if it applies to WP.org bloggers or just us. No Blogger blogs, though, get any benefit from this. The links don't show in their Technorati profile.

That means it's deliberate, to my mind.

Also: whiner! I just pulled an all-nighter editing ESL librarianship theses. And I have a meeting in four hours. Where'd I put the Visine?

  6. Been there, done that. I don't get paid enough for pulling too many all-nighters. That's why I slack off so much now. :-)

  7. I wonder if it's related to rel=nofollow?

I checked my blog and my recent commenters is still showing rel=nofollow. Maybe it's theme related?

It would be a good idea to turn off rel=nofollow on logged in wordpress.com commenters... they should be considered "trusted".

It could be Technorati is broken and not ignoring rel=nofollow like it usually does. Technorati is often breaking in weird ways.

  8. SAH-WEEEET stuff... noice find RC!

  9. Dr Mike emailed and said it's a nofollow issue; they set it to be FOLLOW for WP blogs.

I confirmed it doesn't work that way for Blogger blogs, but it DOES work this way for WP.org blogs. Dunno about Open ID users.

Shoot. The Myspace referrals I'm getting aren't counting on Technorati.

  11. So the more comments we make, the more traffic?

    ok!

  12. No, the more comments the higher we rank in Technorati. I've gone up 1500.

  13. Ohhh ok, I get it. I need more comments >:(

  14. Make more comments. It's only comments you make on other WP.com blogs that have this effect. Click around and start talking to people!

  15. and wordpress blogs are the best anyways, of course, so no need to comment anywhere else :p

  16. @weirdscience
    You made me SMILE :D

  17. Has anyone noticed if this is still working? This morning I commented on every wordpress blog and so far I got zippo!

  18. Yea, I've been commenting and I got the same results. Other than getting some views from the commented on blogs :D

  19. Worked for me nine hours ago. Remember that with Technorati there's often a lag time.

  20. word of advice tho, guys. don't put too much effort into this because it'll eventually be fixed and then what was the point?

  21. "Fixed" depends what you mean, though. I expect Technorati will eventually catch on, but I also know that Technorati don't bother to make changes quickly. I also know that WP isn't likely to look on this as a flaw, but rather an enhancement. So the only people who have a vested interest in fixing this are the ones with a demonstrated lack of action.

Also, Technorati won't deduct. So might as well get it in while you can.

  22. Argh. You're right.

What is it about stats addiction that makes us want to spend hours filling out comments like this?

I'm guessing it's only blogs that show the recent comment widget?

  23. So it's only blogs that end in the wordpress.com domain name.

    What's weirder -- I don't think my authority / rank is changing?

    http://technorati.com/blogs/internetducttape.com?reactions

    Authority: 373
    Rank: 10,289

  24. Does that mean that those bloggers who pay for domain mapping of their blogs do not benefit? If so that truly sucks.

  25. It must be related but I have gone up about 7000 spots on the Technorati ladder since noon. It is now just about after 6. Ok, I commented on a few blogs, but this is ridiculous. And Technorati is the only place such a surge is indicated.

  26. For people who are spending time doing this, I've created a greasemonkey script that makes it easier to find blogs that have a recent comment widget.

    http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/11696

Displays a message if the page has a WordPress.com recent comments widget

Also registers a menu command to open five random blogs at once, and adds a link after the comment box to go to another random wordpress.com blog.

This is useful if you want to spend a bit of time commenting and connecting with other WordPress.com bloggers.

It notified you about the Recent Comments widget because you may want to focus on blogs that have it since you'll get a link back to your site on every page for a little while.

Please do not use this to write spammy comments -- all WordPress.com blogs are protected by Akismet and you'll just end up blacklisting yourself.

Here are instructions for using Greasemonkey if you've never used it before:

  27. It's weird how with over 1 million blogs, http://wordpress.com/next/ often takes me to the same blogs again and again.

  28. That's true. And the "random post" widget turns up the same damn posts time and again. Also, thanks for the Greasemonkey script. Very slick.

  29. I've been writing a lot of greasemonkey scripts lately... I'm getting pretty fast at the simple stuff now :)

  30. So I did a test. I see the links from the blogs in reactions: http://technorati.com/blogs/internetducttape.com?reactions

    But authority/rank has not changed.
    Authority: 373
    Rank: 10,289
