I understand that IE8 does not directly support CSS3 text shadows. Are there, however, any workarounds?

None that I know of. You cannot use "web standards" and Internet Explorer in the same sentence unless you are stating that it does not, or selectively supports, web standards.
IE is a web designer's worst nightmare.

BTW, IE9 doesn't even support text shadows.
