text size in sidebar

  1. Hi,
I have a sidebar of text for a copyright notice. I see that some people are able to make that text quite small, which is what I would like for this notice. I'm using the theme Pilcrow by Automattic. I don't see how to adjust the text widget to make that text smaller. Can you help?
    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is skyeblaine.wordpress.com.

  2. Have you tried using HTML and manually coding the font size as expressed in this support documentation entry?

  3. I tried this: <span style=”font-size:x-small;”>Copyright © The Heart of the Matter, 2011. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to Skye Blaine at http://skyeblaine.wordpress.com
This includes all written material and photographs.</span>

but when I saved it, the initial opening html defaulted to <span>
I am not strong in HTML--have the basic idea, but perhaps I've left something out?

  4. I don't see the name of a font there. You didn't define which font you wanted to use.

  5. I've tried using x-small before and had trouble.

    an alternate code might be

    <div style="font-size:85%;"> text block </div>

explanation: the number 85% is 85% of the default text size. (div) is for a block and (span) is inline or a string of text, but you could use either for your widget.

  6. ... and after testing the reason your code is not working because you are using "smart" quotation marks in the code you psted on this thread.

if you paste that code that you posted above into your widget
you must then delete and retype each of those quotation marks.
    then that code will work.

  7. Dlager's suggestion isn't just "might", it's the correct one. Using percentages is the right unit for changing the font size, and the span tag is for characters, words or phrases inside a paragraph, not for a complete block. See here for instructions that are neater and more up-to-date than the Support doc:

  8. Thank you all!
panaghiotisadam, thank you for the final word on dlager's post. Now it's just as I had hoped. Guess I have to learn more about html.
lots of gratitude for your assistance,
    Skye

  9. You're welcome.

This might also be of use to you:

By the way, you need to correct your username link: the URL you've put doesn't exist.

  10. thanks, I've changed the URL. I tried to change my user name--thought when I signed up it said I could change that later, but haven't been able to. Been rethinking using my real name. Any wisdom?
    Skye
