Theme: Twenty Eleven

  1. I am using the single column option of this theme, to display only pages.

    How can I

    1) widen the column width
    2) Display only the Title of pages after searching, not the content)
    3) Remove 'Leave Reply from the Welcome / Home Page
    4) Adjust the font size of Title
    5) Change the wording on the page shown for an unsuccessful search.
    6) Remove the 'Leave Reply' from the list of matching pages, after a search, but not when the page is clicked, to display its contents.

The blog I need help with is timslists.wordpress.com.

  2. 1) widen the column width
Choose the deafult template and yyou will have full widgth pages without a sidebar. If you still expect the page to be wider then that's not possible without purchasing a custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

    2) Display only the Title of pages after searching, not the content)
That's not possible as we cannot edit templates and themes http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/ and CSS editing cannot be used to change the way any theme functions. It can only be used to change appearance.

  3. 3) Remove 'Leave Reply from the Welcome / Home Page
This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page.
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/comments-off-1/
Depending on the theme we use when we close comments a phrase like "comments closed" or a similar phrase may appear and if so, it can only be removed by CSS editing after purchasing a custom design upgrade.

  4. 4) Adjust the font size of Title
That possible with the custom design upgrade and CSS editing. See the links I posted in response to 1) avove.

    5) Change the wording on the page shown for an unsuccessful search.
That's not possibe as we cannot edit templates or themes.

    6) Remove the 'Leave Reply' from the list of matching pages, after a search, but not when the page is clicked, to display its contents.
That's not possibe as we cannot edit templates or themes.

  5. This article describes is how the version of Twenty Eleven theme version that we have here at WordPress.com, where all blogs are on the same multiuser blogging platfom, and all blogs wearing the same theme are using the same template is coded to function.

If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to access the database, upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.

Please read this > WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences

  6. Thank you for all the detailed replies.

Sadly it seems, I can not do what I want with WordPress.com.

I am aware of wordpress.org, but by the time you have learnt how it actually works, all the subtleties of versions, making backups and keeping it updated with the associated non compatibility issues, you might as well code your own site.

Sorry to be so negative, but I just need a simple online CMS, where I can control the look of the pages and search results, without having the overhead of maintaining, installing and updating the back end. Perhaps you should create a PagePress.com in addition to WordPress.com !!

How difficult would it be to take the basic Sandbox theme and attempt to do what I want ?

  7. WordPress is the simplest CMS around. Period. Any web software will have to be updated. Any website has to be backed up (unless you don't mind losing your stuff if there is a server failure or you get hacked or something). Any website can have problems. Welcome to the internet.

Making the changes to the CSS to widen twenty eleven is not hard at all. You do have to be a little careful though as it is what is called a "reactive" design which means it adjusts automatically to whatever system it is being viewed on, so it looks good whether viewing it on a desktop monitor, a laptop, a tablet, or a smart phone. In fact, the code for widening twenty eleven is already here in the CSS forum since this question has come up many, many times.

Sandbox and Tool box are blank slates with no CSS whatsoever. You would have to build all the CSS yourself referencing the HTML. It isn't rocket science, but it isn't for a novice either, and it is time consuming.

  8. Frankly, more difficult than you expect. If coding a WP.org site is beyond your capabilities, then tweaking Sandbox to do what you want is way beyond what you can do.

  9. @thesacredpath
Are you saying, I would need to backup a wordpress.com blog ? I don't think so. I may lose some entries, but not the whole blog.

Updates to wordpress.com should not affect any existing entries, unless using some obscure add-ons.

I put 'widen twenty eleven' in search forums, but did not find anything useful.

Having over 40 years computing experience, I am well aware of computing and internet problems, that is why I want to pass the responsibility to someone else and use something like wordpress.com, with a few personal tweaks.

    @raincoaster

Is there a primer or howto or getting-started for tweaking Sandbox ?

    @timethief

The article about twenty eleven you kindly provided a link for gives 'page not found'
