Thumbnail image along with brief of post on Home page

  1. I'd like to be able to include a small thumbnail image along with the text of a post on the Home page. Currently I have set up the post such that a few lines appear for each post on the Home page, followed by 'Continue reading' which the viewer will click to read the complete post.

    A small thumbnail image along with this text on the Home page will make the post more attractive. Can someone help me with how to do so?

    The blog I need help with is bhavenjani.wordpress.com.

  2. This is the result of clicking your username:
    travelphotographer.wordpress.com is no longer available.
    The authors have deleted this blog.

    We need you to post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question. As we do not know which theme you are using we cannot answer you. On most themes the excerpt function is dead. One some it works and can be used to post a thumbnail image and snippet with "read more" link. See here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/the-excerpt-function/

  3. Thanks for the quick response. my wordpress site is:
    bhavenjani.wordpress.com and not travelphotographer.wordpress.com

    And I am not sure what you mean when you say: We need you to post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question. As we do not know which theme you are using we cannot answer you. Can you pls elaborate

    My current theme is Twenty-Eleven

  4. This is an active link http://bhavenjani.wordpress.com
    This is how to link your active blog to your username. Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ select the URL for your primary wordpress.com blog and then save changes.

    Now every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

  5. This is a link to all Twenty Eleven threads for your searching convenience > http://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/twenty-eleven
    This is a link to an informative post on that theme > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/workings-of-duster/
    The theme does have an active excerpt box that you can enter the HTML code for a thumbnail image, text and a read more link into prior to publication.

  6. Thanks again, and the link to the twenty-eleven tags was very useful. However i couldnt make out an iota from the second link (workings of duster), just couldnt figure out the context of that page nor what is being explained in it.

    Any help on specific instructions on how to show an image along with the brief of a post would help.

  7. You insert the thumbnail in the post, cut its code from the HTML editor, paste it into the Excerpt module, add the text you want, click Update.
    If you're seeing no Excerpt module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right) to activate it.

  8. Cool, thanks so much both of u. With a bit of trial and error i have now managed to add a thumbnail image to my brief post on the home page:)

    A minor query related to this though. Currently the text starts towards the right bottom of the image, which means that most of the area to the right of the image is blank white space. (I have set the image to 100 x 100 pixels). Is there a way that the top edge of the image can be aligned with the first line of the excerpt text? Or something similar so that they are side by side?

  9. You've written:
    align="alignleft"
    Needs to be:
    class="alignleft"

  10. awesome, this addresses my need now:) Bhaven

  11. Ok, but I am facing a new problem now in a new post i just put on the site. I followed the same steps as I did for my earlier steps, but now I get two images on my home page. One is the image i provided in the excerpt, and another image that the site seems to automatically pull out from what i have inserted in my post. I have two questions now:
    1. If I dont include an image in the excerpt, how do i select which image from my post appears on the homepage?
    2. If i include an image in the excerpt, how do i disable the image from within my post from appearing on the home page (it doesnt make sense having two images, right!)

  12. That's because you selected the Gallery post format; switch to Standard.

  13. Will try that, but for all my previous posts, I have used the Gallery format and it has worked perfectly for me. Its only on this post that its giving me trouble.

  14. If you're talking about http://bhavenjani.wordpress.com/ , then no: if the other posts used the Gallery format, you would see the note "this gallery conatins n photos".

  15. Yes, i am referring to the bhavenjani.wordpress.com site. I think they have made some changes to the 2011 theme. My previous posts (prior to 27th July) are in Gallery format and have allowed to me write an excerpt and put an image there (this image appears with a border).

    However my posts from 27th July pull out a random image from the post it put it on the Home page, inspite of putting an image in the excerpt. This is the problem that I am unable to address.

    Btw, Standard format does not allow you to put an excerpt at all.

  16. Yes, you're right - sorry, I got confused and misled you. I think I've now found what's going on. A Gallery format post will display the extra thumbnail and the note on number of photos only if the photos are attached to the post (uploaded via the Add an Image tool of the editor of that post). So you can have your excerpts the way you want them if you make sure the images in the new post aren't attached to it: upload and insert them to another post, then cut their code from the HTML editor and paste them to the HTML editor of the new post, or upload them via Media > Add New, copy their URLs and insert them via the "From URL" option of the Add an Image tool.
