Transferring my wordpress blog

  1. I've been researching all this BS for transferring my thekerrminator.wordpress.com blog to my already existing site thekerrminator.com. My site is on Machighway and I'm quite sure wordpress will work on it, but I guess I'm just confused about what method to use and what will be best for me.

I read this article here, http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org but I didn't see anything in the article that says it DOESN'T transfer stats, followers/subscribers, etc. Is it only transferring files or does it transfer all that other stuff as well?

I know about the guided transfer, http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/, and that will transfer everything, but I still have to pay yearly the $13 for the link redirect. I really want a seamless transfer that moves over my theme, stats, subscribers. . . I feel like the guided transfer + the yearly link redirect is the way to go, but I just want some reassurance from people that have done this.

The blog I need help with is thekerrminator.wordpress.com.

  2. If you are comfortable with WordPress, you can export your information from your WordPress.com site and then import it into your self-hosted site (WordPress.org):

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/#manual-export-or-guided-transfer

Then you'll want to setup Jetpack and request your subscribers and stats be moved:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

Finally, you'll want to setup the site redirect.

If you would prefer a staff member handle the migration, then I recommend Guided Transfer along with a site redirect:

  3. Thanks for the reply!

This brings up more questions though (haha)

I started this thread http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/can-i-redirect-my-wordpress-site-without-the-fees?replies=2#post-1368360 a while ago and obviously I only got one reply which made me believe the transfer couldn't happen without the $129 fee.

So if I do the manual export, and then request my subscribers be moved, is there a fee for that? Also, they mention in the second article you posted to just "contact" them, but where on their "contact page" am I actually contacting someone at worpress directly? All I see is the thing for starting a thread on the forum. . . How do I initiate the transfer of my subscribers and stats?

  4. Is there a way to contact someone at wordpress directly other than these community forums?

  5. Another question I have is can I even have it transferred to MacHighway? It's not one of the "hand-picked" hosts so will this not even work for me?? I'd love to have my questions answered! So frustrated being a user for years and not being able to get a clear answer from the company themselves without having to fork over dough. >: (

  6. If you decide to transfer your blog content manually you can simply move it to any of your desired hosts.

There is no fee for that. If you have the Jetpack plugin installed you can contact us to request a transfer of your stats and subscribers.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

  7. Thanks for the reply. Along with transferring the subscribers, can you transfer my stats as well? I'm hung up on whether I need to pay or not because I don't understand why there is the fee if you'll do the majority of the moving for free if i just move my content manually.

  8. There us no charge for Staff to transfer your subscribers and stats.
If you have the required skills to move you own content and set up a WordPress.org install then go for it and do it yourself . Don't purchase the guided transfer to have Staff do all that work for you, work that is, of course, paid work.

    Here's a summary of what's involved:
To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme as they cannot be exported. See 3 below.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/

    2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
    http://wordpress.org/themes/
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/

    3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.

    4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/

    5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

    6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up your WordPress.ORG site for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
