I upgraded to video hosting, thinking this would enable me to stick a video to the front page and have it play there. Apparently I was wrong. Is there another layout that has this functionality? I really like the multiple posts layout on the front page of Triton Lite.

You are correct that you can't display videos on the Triton Lite home/front page. Images only.
There are a few themes that are video friendly, but I couldn't say whether they indeed display the video on the front/home page.
