Trying to use Filezilla to upload theme to wordpress for the first time

  1. I've downloaded a theme from Theme forest and I've looked at a bunch of youtube tutorials and other tutorials.

I think I know how to upload the theme etc and go from there but...
What do you type into File zilla?
What is the host, and presumally I use My username and password as I would normally log into WordPress
    Host: ?????? Username:**************** Password*************

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is ryanbdonnelly.wordpress.com.

  2. WordPress.com blogs do not have FTP access nor can we use any theme other than the ones found in our Dashboard under Appearance>Themes.

  3. Uhhh.. that could definately be the problem.. So am I on the worng site or what?
I downloaded a theme for wordpress..?

  4. We cannot add/upload themes at wordpress.COM. We are limited to the 180+ (and growing) themes found in the dashboard under appearance > themes. Themes found on the internet are for self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG.

Themes at wordpress.COM have to be modified to work within the restrictions here and to support the unique features.

The differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org (self-hosted) sites.

To use the theme you downloaded you will have to self-host a blog using the software from wordpress.ORG on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy, bluehost, etc. Figure an average monthly cost, all expenses considered, of about $10 to $25

  5. If you are talking about the site linked to your username, which is hosted here on WordPress.com, you're on the right site, just need to be aware of what you can and cannot do here. :)

Maybe reading this will help? http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you are talking about a different site, give us the URL starting with http:// to make it clickable.

  7. Okay... Damn.

i was under the impression that you could download any wordpress theme and use it on your wordpress blog.

Whats the difference between the .com and .org? if I've paid for having a WordPress blog with all the features. can I transfer that to wordpress.org? or did I just do something completely wrong.

And I've tried to download WordPress... what do you do after that? its a bunch of files... do I upload that somewhere aswell?

Just read that article. very helpful in understanding the difference between them.

  8. if I've paid for having a WordPress blog with all the features.

Again, if you are talking about WordPress.com, what you've probably paid for are upgrades, but the blog and hosting itself on WordPress.com are free.

    As tsp said above

To use the theme you downloaded you will have to self-host a blog using the software from wordpress.ORG on a third-party hosting service such as godaddy, bluehost, etc. Figure an average monthly cost, all expenses considered, of about $10 to $25

And yes, you will have to upload those files, both the stand-alone WordPress software and the theme to your 3rd party hosting service. Stand-alone WordPress is supported at http://wordpress.org/support so if you need assistance with it, that's where you'll need to go.
