I was hoping to be able to put 'side comments' in my blog in a smaller point size (8 pt) ... and, by using <ctrl>8, it *looked* like it worked onscreen. However, when I published the post, all the type was at the standard type size (10 or 12 pt, whichever it is). The 8 pt type paragraph didn't "take".
Is there a way to do this within a single post? Do I need to buy the upgrade to do it?

Yes and no are your answers. Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page can be done by coding into the HTML (Text) editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/
