Unable to “read more”

Could someone help on this please… I am pulling my hair out! I have a blog as part of my main page and when I create a new blog, I don’t want to have the full entry, just a few lines with a “more” link that takes the reader off to the full blog. I have read everything about adding <!–more–> which works fine in terms of cutting the blog to just a few lines, but when i click on the link, i get taken to a dead page. It’s probably really easy, but how how how do I see the full blog?
