Upcoming Events Widget Displaying Events not on my Calendar!

  1. A parent pointed out to me today that there are 'false events' in my Upcoming Events feed.

Right now it is set to automatically pull events from my Google Calendar http://howardpublicschool.com/calendar/

I had an event on there for Wed Sept 18 that said Home & School meeting 7pm with a few more details.

Today I notice that in Upcoming Events there is an event that says Home & School meeting on TUESDAY Sept 17th at 8PM. I have no idea where this came from!!! I have never had this event on my calendar.

I have since deleted the 'offending' Wed Sept 18th post to see if that would fix it, but it hasn't.

    Help?!

The blog I need help with is howardpublicschool.com.

  2. I've tried everything I can think of.

I have recopied and pasted the ical code from the original calendar into the widget to see if that "reset" it.
I have moved it temporarily to the 'inactive widgets' section, then moved it back.
I have played around the with number of "items to show".
I have deleted all Home & School meetings from my calendar just in case there is an issue on the Google end

And I STILL cannot get rid of that stupid Home & School meeting reminder that gives the wrong time and wrong day that I NEVER put on my Google calendar!!

    Ugh! Anyone?

  3. Hi there,

It can take some time for Google calendars to update, so when you make changes to the events on your calendar you may need to wait a bit for the changes to be reflected on your site.

I took a look at your calendar here: http://howardpublicschool.com/calendar/

I see the "Home & School Meeting" event on Sept. 18 at 7 pm, as you mentioned in your first post. If you check again, are you still seeing the event at the wrong date/time?

  4. Thank you for the response.

Mysteriously this phantom event disappeared when the WordPress formatting/colour problem was fixed?

Still have no idea what the problem was - as this event was NEVER on my google calendar - but I'm happy it's gone. :)

    Thank you @rachelmcr

  5. Sadly this same problem is back again :(

I have scheduled chess club on my Google calendar to happen from 12pm to 12:30pm every Tuesday from October 8th to December 3rd.

It is now showing up in my Upcoming Events Widget on both Mondays from 8-8pm AND Tuesdays from 8-8:30am!! Both are WRONG.
The "at lunch" part is correct so clearly it's pulling some information from the event.

Any advice? This widget is so frustrating!

  6. Hi there,

I'm sorry for the frustration with this! I see what you mean — it looks like the Upcoming Events widget is displaying recurring (e.g. weekly) events incorrectly. I reported this to our team, so they will work on a fix for this issue.

Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime. :)

  7. Hi,

I am also having the exact same problem with my calendar widget. Is there anyone that can assist me on fixing it, as this is a business page and displaying wrong dates/times is a huge inconvenience.

  8. @furlanclub - I'm sorry you're having trouble with this. Our team is looking into the issue, but we don't have an exact timeline for when it will be fixed.

  9. The upcoming events widget has been fixed so that recurring events now display in the correct timezone. Thanks again for reporting the problem and sorry for the trouble!

  10. Interesting that you just noted it was fixed 2 days ago as the widget has actually been working for the last two weeks and as of today has started creating phantom events for me again.

It is listing Chess Club at the wrong time again (as a double event) and it is missing Book Buddies all together.

  11. I think it may depend on how you are creating recurring events and which calendar software you are using. I tested recurring events saved using Google Calendar, and those are what I verified were fixed.

  12. I have been creating them logged into my Gmail account using google calendar, same as I've been doing for years.

The recurring events seem to work fine many times over and display normally on the actual calendar. The 'lost in translation' moment appears to be with the widget.

It doesn't happen with every recurring event I create, only with a couple of them which has me so stymied.

I think I'd understand better if, say the details are correct, but the time is shifted an hour or two, however, the widget changes the times as well (ie. right now lists chess club from 12am-12am). It is so very odd.

  13. I'd like to try to catch another example in action. I just checked http://howardpublicschool.com/ and most of the events don't have a time. The "Book Buddies" event shows up as November 25, 2013 at 4:00 pm – 4:45 pm, and that one matches the time shown for the matching event in the at http://howardpublicschool.com/calendar/

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my google calendar and upcoming events widget. There are currently three events showing up for next week that aren't on my google calendar. Last week these were still showing instead of the events that were actually taking place! Hope this provides the other example you're looking for.....

Forgot to add, my site is http://www.emmylaine.com

  16. @inspirationofgaia, I checked http://emmylaine.com/ just now and I see these events:

    • Donation Class! Lunchtime Yoga Sadhana @ The Sanctuary, December 10, 2013 at 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
    • Yoga Monks Flow @ Seventh Chakra Yoga, December 10, 2013 at 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
    • Yoga Nidra @ Ra Yoga, December 10, 2013 at 8:45 pm – 9:45 pm

Looking at the first one in the list as an example, I checked https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/boej8moku9egotkkc7hm26qs2k%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics and found the corresponding code for an event with the same title:

    BEGIN:VEVENT
    DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20131112T123000
    DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20131112T133000
    RRULE:FREQ=WEEKLY;BYDAY=TU
    EXDATE;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20131126T123000
    DTSTAMP:20131205T133230Z
    UID:l2va12t73jg9a8k6hbmudb7350@google.com
    ATTENDEE;CUTYPE=INDIVIDUAL;ROLE=REQ-PARTICIPANT;PARTSTAT=ACCEPTED;CN=Emmy L

    TRANSP:OPAQUE
    END:VEVENT

I noticed that the "RRULE" line in the event's code says that it should be listed weekly, so it makes sense to me that one is showing up. But I'm also realizing these could all be correct in the widget since it has been over a week since you posted before.

Can you take a look at the events currently in the upcoming events widget at http://emmylaine.com/ and let me know which ones are incorrect and what they should be instead or if they are showing up when they shouldn't?

Also, can you tell me how you added that event to your calendar, what calendar app you used, and whether you imported events from an outside source at any point?

  17. @howardpublicschool:

It doesn't happen with every recurring event I create, only with a couple of them which has me so stymied.

What calendar app did you use to create the events and were any of them imported from an outside source?

It is listing Chess Club at the wrong time again (as a double event) and it is missing Book Buddies all together.

You mentioned that back on Nov 3, so I was looking back at it again for an updated example. I just checked http://howardpublicschool.com/ and I see Chess Club listed twice:

    • Chess Club, December 10, 2013 at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
    • Chess Club, December 17, 2013 at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

The dates look correct, but I think the time should be 5:00pm instead of 12:00pm.

Is anything else wrong with the current list from the widget at http://howardpublicschool.com/ ?

  18. The dates look correct, but I think the time should be 5:00pm instead of 12:00pm.

    I was wrong. :)

I think the times are correct for http://howardpublicschool.com/ right now.

@howardpublicschool, could you let me know if you're still having any trouble?

Hello. The widget is still not displaying the events correctly and now it seems like there's no rhyme or reason to it!

It's not pulling in tomorrow's event (ntro to Yoga Monks @ Seventh Chakra Yoga, Fri, December 6, 7:30am – 8:30am).

The first two events that are listed on the widget ( Yoga Monks Flow @ Seventh Chakra Yoga December 9, 2013 at 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm and Yoga Nidra @ Ra Yoga December 9, 2013 at 8:45 pm – 9:45 pm) are actually scheduled for the 10th, not the 9th.

Also, the events aren't appearing in chronological order according to time within a day.

    Thanks for your help :-)

  20. @inspirationofgaia, thanks for including specific details!

We're puzzled by the few that are showing up a day early—my theory is that the same thing is happening to all three events you mentioned and the Dec 6 one isn't showing because it's already dropped of (i.e. if it's displaying a day early for some odd reason then it would have been displayed earlier on Dec 5 which is in the past now).

We'll start looking into it in more detail tomorrow. It's good to have these examples!

  21. My apologies to everyone for not keeping up with this thread.
It appears as though all of my events are displaying correctly right now. The problems seem to disappear as unpredictably as they appear!

At it's worst the widget was doing things as @inspirationofgaia described. Changing dates, times and event details.

I created all of the events when logged into my google account, on google calendar and have never imported events from other sources.

As a precaution I have stopped doing recurring events, I just type them all in individually to avoid the aggravation and unpredictability of the widget.

  22. It appears as though all of my events are displaying correctly right now. The problems seem to disappear as unpredictably as they appear!

We've applied a few updates which should fix most of the problems that were reported earier :) but a few exceptions keep popping up and I'm filing those as I find them.

    Sorry again for the trouble!

  23. Hey guys

I've been following the threads on iCal playing havoc and it got a bit complex for my tech abilities! Sounds like some issues are fixed, mostly on an individual basis, and some are still being explored?

I'm getting a mix of issues: recurring events still show up even when I delete one of the dates and some dates are just wrong.

The website I need help with is
    http://findingyoga.com.au/2013/12/09/body-and-self-awareness-through-yoga-for-sufferers-of-chronic-fatigue-and-fibromyalgia-whoa-long-title/

Anything you see could be done or should I disable the widget for a bit?

    Many thanks :)
    Rachael

  24. Sounds like some issues are fixed, mostly on an individual basis, and some are still being explored?

I think all the specific issues I worked on with users have been fixed by now, but it appears that ics files can have some pretty crazy stuff in them when it comes to recurring events, so there could be more things to review and if you're having trouble I can help document all the issues.

recurring events still show up even when I delete one of the dates

Events are cached for about an hour and it's also possible your calendar provider itself caches the events (which can make getting the update on the WordPress.com side slower in some cases). Do the deleted events go away after an hour or so?

    some dates are just wrong

I checked the sidebar at http://findingyoga.com.au/2013/12/09/body-and-self-awareness-through-yoga-for-sufferers-of-chronic-fatigue-and-fibromyalgia-whoa-long-title/ and I see these events right now.

    • Vinyasa at Yoga Vine, December 23, 2013 at 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
    • Special Christmas Guided Relaxation and Yoga Nidra, December 24, 2013 at 9:30 am – 10:45 am Sun Salute Yoga
    • Christmas break, December 25, 2013 at 12:00 am – January 3, 2014 at 12:00 am, It's the holiday season!

Could you tell me exactly which dates/times are wrong? They look correct to me compared to the data in your calendar feed https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/43djdemn16t5o5tn701j900ii4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

  25. Thank you.

The events to date haven't been going away within the hour but there also aren't any there at the moment that are completely out of whack. Most are deleted recurring events that still show up so would love some tips on sorting that out.

The Dec 23 Vinyasa class is a recurring event that is not on that week. I removed it from my calendar for that week (and I actually couldn't see it in the calendar feed you sent but I did just have a quick look).

I just increased the number of events to show in the feed to five and the two additions (creative vinyasa) are also deleted events in a recurring one.

    Thanks!
    Rachael

  26. Hi designsimply

Just checking in if you've managed to have a look at the issues with my calendar syncing? The blog posts I've seen suggest this hasn't been resolved for others so if that's the case I really need to de-activate the widget. No worries if it's working but people keep wanting to book into classes so I do need to take down the incorrect information.

The events on Jan 9 and 16 showing up on my blog don't exist in my calendar and aren't deleted recurring events.

    Many thanks,
    Rachael

  27. My apologies. I didn't see your last reply before!

I checked https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/43djdemn16t5o5tn701j900ii4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics again and I see these timezone-related settings at the top:

    X-WR-CALNAME:Finding Yoga classes and events
    X-WR-TIMEZONE:Australia/Perth
    X-WR-CALDESC:
    BEGIN:VTIMEZONE
    TZID:Australia/Perth
    X-LIC-LOCATION:Australia/Perth
    BEGIN:STANDARD
    TZOFFSETFROM:+0800
    TZOFFSETTO:+0800
    TZNAME:WST

Next I looked for an event that could be listed on Jan 9, and I found this one:

    BEGIN:VEVENT
    DTSTART;TZID=Australia/Perth:20130402T093000
    DTEND;TZID=Australia/Perth:20130402T104500
    RRULE:FREQ=WEEKLY
    EXDATE;TZID=Australia/Perth:20131001T093000
    EXDATE;TZID=Australia/Perth:20131008T093000
    EXDATE;TZID=Australia/Perth:20131231T093000
    EXDATE;TZID=Australia/Perth:20140107T093000
    DTSTAMP:20140108T160434Z

    TRANSP:OPAQUE
    END:VEVENT

I'm not sure if that's the even you saw listed in your widget or not, but it has some complex rules, and I bet you could fix the problem with the Jan 9 event in the short term by finding the older one from 2013 with the title "Gentle Yoga for Persistent Pain" and removing it.

I also checked for an even on Jan 16, and I found the same title, "Gentle Yoga for Persistent Pain." Could you try searching for events with the title "Gentle Yoga for Persistent Pain" and removing that one recurring event from the past in your calendar since it seems to be causing some odd problems?

Were those events on Jan 9 and 16 the only remaining problems left?

  28. Great, thank you, that all looks good now.
