Upcoming Events widget displays no events.

  1. I'm not sure what I've done wrong here - both the widget and shortcode for "Upcoming Events" have stopped displaying anything except "No upcoming events". I've double checked that both the calendar and the (recurring) events are public, and I've checked the iCalendar URL is correct.

They both worked when I set them up originally, albeit with incorrect time zones, and I haven't touched them since, so I'm not sure there's much more detail I can give.

On http://notslangcath.wordpress.com/schedule/ you can see the Google styled embedded one works fine, but above it is an Upcoming Events shortcode drawing from the same calendar. It used to display a table of events, but now it just says "No upcoming events". The same text is shown in the widget at the side.

The calendar itself can be viewed at https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=0bf7degac4km43sb0g4ha63uuo%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles

    Any advice welcomed.

The blog I need help with is notslangcath.wordpress.com.

  2. I'm still having this issue, and feeling like an utter idiot, as I'm clearly the only one who's managed to muck up this badly.

I've tried with the private ical url, which doesn't work either.

Yet they both return perfectly fine ical files with all event info in, when I navigate manually to the url.

Does nobody have a suggestion for whatvstupid mistake I'm making that's caused it to stop working?

  3. I can't seem to edit my previous post, so I'd like to add that I just created a new calendar, imported some events, followed the same steps, and now that one works.

What worries me is that the original calendar was a replacement for a colleague's whose calendar suddenly started only displaying "No upcoming events". I assumed he'd set it to private by mistake, but now I'm wondering...

...it's almost like it stops importing the events? How do I kickstart it into behaving if this is what is happening?

  4. Just to add, none of these calendars ever have any new events. They're just the same ol' events, recurring day after day, week after week. Could that cause problems?

  5. Oh dear. When I went to sleep, the new one was working.

Now that I've woken up again, it isn't?

I really am not sure what I'm doing wrong :/

  6. I've been busy with other stuff so haven't touched it this week.

The new calendar is now as borked as the old one though...

I feel like a right plonker...

  7. Alright, time to get methodical.

    This is my current repo.

    1) Create public Google calendar
    2) Add some public events, recurring weekly.
3)Following the steps in http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/upcoming-events/, add an Upcoming Events widget to your sidebar and populate it with the .ics link.
4)Leave to sit for a week.

    Expected behaviour:
Upcoming events should show up as time elapses, and old ones disappear.

    Observed behaviour:
The widget is initially populated with upcoming events correctly, and disappear after their scheduled time. However, they are not replaced with the subsequent recurrences. Instead, "No upcoming events" is displayed. Querying the Google calendar separately still shows the events correctly.

  8. Thank you Ana for the detailed steps. I've asked a developer to look at this and I'll get back to you as soon as I have something. Thank you for your patience.

  9. I seem to have the same issues as Ana, i've tested both embeded in blog and with the widget Upcoming events as well as a text Widget. The embeded and text widget work but not Upcoming events and they use the same calender source.

  10. Hurrah! Finally, someone else with this problem - glad to see I'm not going mad(der).

  11. Hi,

It turns out that our widget does not properly display recurring events. I have filed a bug report, but I do not have a timeline for when it will be fixed, sorry. If you want your recurring events to display, you'll need to enter them as single events in your calendar for now.

  12. I'm surprised that this wasn't picked up before now, but thank you for the update :)

  13. I have been having the same problem, thanks for looking into this

  14. I think I have a similar problem. When I enter an event into google that is 'all day', it shows up in the list of 'upcoming events' with the wrong date (1 day early)

  15. The issue where recurring events were not showing up was fixed 7 weeks ago on 2013 Sep 09.

Thanks for including specific details in your original help request above!

The issue where recurring events aren't showing in the correct timezone that sunnybrookgi reported is currently under review.

  16. We've fixed the issue where some recurring events were not being displayed correctly in the upcoming events widget.

@sunnybrookgi, please reply here to let me know if you're still having any trouble with recurring events showing up as the wrong time.

  17. It is January 2014 and it appears this same problem has reappeared. My repeating events from the Google calendar do not show up with my WordPress Upcoming Events Widget.

  18. @k4gar, just to make sure, have you verified that your calendar timezone setting is correct? If you've already checked the setting and you're still having problems, could you point me to a specific example URL where I can see the problem happening on your blog? Could you also let me know at least one event title that is showing at the wrong time and what time you expected it to be? It helps me a ton to look at a specific example.

  19. I have exactly the same problem. Recurring event, worked fine at first but now "no upcoming events".

  20. @avysk, could you provide a link to your WordPress.com blog with the upcoming events widget in place so I can take a closer look?

  21. Hi, Sorry to butt in buy I've been having the same problem with my calendar, here's its URL:
    http://thefoxpub.wordpress.com/about/events/

    thanks

  22. Yes, the same problem is happening with our calendar too. Upcoming events initially displayed properly, and then stopped updating altogether... anyone working on this still? WordPress? Please? :)

I have the same problem. It refuses to update the dates and have stopped on Feb 17th

    http://www.norakk.se

  24. @macnetwork, thanks for including a link. I looked at y our calendar page, and I see that the weekly recurring events are still being skipped by the widget. I think this is slightly different than the issues we found and fixed earlier, so I have added your case in a separate note on a new bug report.

I'm not sure how long until the widget can be reviewed again, so a temporary, short-term fix would be to delete the recurring events and re-add them as one-time events. You can also try adding them back as recurring events to see if that works if you have time to test that.

    Sorry for the trouble!

  25. @thewallacepost, I looked at http://thewallacepost.com/ and I didn't see a calendar page that I could use for reference. I did see that there's a widget titled "Upcoming Soc Events" in the top of your sidebar that says "No upcoming events."

Next I looked in your widgets and I found you're using this as your iCal feed URL: https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/wallace.hall.grads%40gmail.com/public/basic.ics

Could you let me know what the next event is that you're expecting to see in the upcoming events widget right now?

  26. @danielpernordlund, I checked http://norakk.se/ and I see the next event showing in the upcoming events widget is:

    Seniorträning
    17 februari, 2014 kl. 10:00 f m – 11:00 f m

Could you let me know what event title you were expecting to see as the next one instead of that one?

  27. I've been on with this website now for over a month and have yet to see any Upcoming Events loading from the icalendar. I've tried the single event solution suggested with no success. Any ideas please? http://www.lesburyvillagehall.co.uk

  28. @peterh324, I checked the widget settings for your site at http://lesburyvillagehall.co.uk/ and I found that you had this listed for the iCalendar Feed URL setting: https://www.google.com/calendar/render?tab=wc

That won't work because it's not the right link. To get the correct link, go to the following help page and follow steps 1 through 5 under the "Getting a Calendar Link" section: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/upcoming-events/#getting-a-calendar-link

Once you have the right link, the widget should start working!

designsimply: I have events every day. They are located at the top menu called "Schema"

  30. I've had second thoughts about my calendar issue because for what I'm doing the 'bug' has really become an 'undocumented feature'. So I have frequent weekly events–eg curry every Monday– that would clutter up the forthcoming events widget. It actually works better for me to enter Valentine's day manually each year and have that highlighted in the widget. So please DON'T FIX IT!
Or maybe you could add some kind of control to manage recurring events differently from one-offs?
