Upcoming Events widget shows wrong times, deleted events

  1. Several events from my Google Calendar are showing the wrong time on our site:

    http://cubpack150.net/

    Others should have been deleted.

    Calendar:

    https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=84pe23o27srck3otfg74qd0trc%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York

    Feed:

    https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/84pe23o27srck3otfg74qd0trc%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

I have tried removing some events and recreating them. I have also tried removing the widget and replacing it. My time zones for the blog and calendar match. Any more suggestions?

The blog I need help with is brixius.wordpress.com.

  2. So, as you can probably tell, there is something amiss with the Upcoming Events widget. We are aware of the issue and are looking into it.

I will post updates here as they are available: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/upcoming-events-widget-is-having-a-few-problems?replies=1

Please subscribe to that thread so that you are alerted to them.

  3. First, thank you very much for including details such as the calendar ics file in your help request. I really appreciate that!

I looked at http://cubpack150.net/ to find some specific examples of events with wrong times. I found a Pinewood Derby event that I think is a one-time event and the date/time is correct:

Pinewood Derby Car Cutting & Painting
    November 1, 2013 at 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

But I see the Den Meeting on Nov 7 showing as:

    Den Meeting
    November 7, 2013 at 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

And I think it should be 6:30 pm instead like this:

    Den Meeting
    November 7, 2013 at 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Could you confirm for me that only repeating events, like the Den Meeting for example, are the ones having trouble?

  4. I checked http://cubpack150.net/ just now and the Nov 7 Den Meeting is showing up as 6:30pm so I think the timezone issue is fixed in your case.

Please let me know if you're still having any trouble with recurring events in the upcoming events widget.

  5. Yes, I am still having trouble with deleted instances of recurring events showing up in the widget.

  6. The widget does get cached and could take a little time between when you first delete an event to when it actually gets removed from the widget if you've viewed it before. Do the deleted events go away eventually, or are they still there a long time afterward?

Next time you delete an event from the calendar, could you let me know the title, description, date and time for the one you deleted?

  7. No, they seem to hang around or just display a time that was changed and shows up properly on Google.

I just deleted the event titled Committee Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21, which on Google was showing as 6:30-7:30 p.m. but the widget shows as being from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

  8. Okay. Let's keep digging until we can pinpoint a really good specific example because that will help me communicate the problem back to my team clearly.

I checked http://cubpack150.net/ just now and I don't see a "Committee Meeting" event listed for November at all: https://cloudup.com/c7syGlBYw5y

Did I not check the calendar in time? I feel like I got to it in time (just barely), but could you maybe give me one more example so I can try to catch the problem in action again?

  9. Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for sticking with me! Here is a snapshot of the agenda view from Google Calendar:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BymsKGMVYPecUXV3R2kwNDlkTUE/edit?usp=sharing

Notice that the times for Dec. 12 and 19 events do not square with what displays in the widget:

    http://cubpack150.net/

  10. This example is perfect. I tested the widget and found that the Dec 12 and Dec 19 events are listed as 1:30pm in the widget but should be 6:30pm. I'm going to add this example to my list.

Earlier, you also mentioned that you were having trouble with deleted events showing up when they shouldn't. I see that you switched to a Google Calendar embed in the sidebar so you may not have any examples of that, but if you find any later, I'd like to take a closer look at that issue as well.

  11. We've updated! And recurring event should be showing up at the correct timezone now. I checked your .icse file in a test again just now and the Dec 12 and Dec 19 and events are showing up at 6:30 pm as they should.

Can you try the widget again and let me know if you see any other problems?

  12. I have the same problems.

This plug-in has never worked correctly for over a year and is an embarrassment when I teach wordpress classes.

Please advise when this is fixed.

    Thanks,
    Bryan

  13. @bhhoyer, we've actually made several updates to it recently. Just to make sure, have you verified that your calendar timezone setting is correct? If you've already checked the setting and you're still having problems, could you point me to a specific example URL where I can see the problem happening on one of your blogs? Could you also let me know at least one event title that is showing at the wrong time and what time you expected it to be? It helps me a ton to look at a specific example.

  14. I too am having problems with recurring events on my blog: http://www.kiiln.org.
    Calender Feed:
    https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/ugdfoo24ce0m4m565r27vqh7u4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

Worked fine earlier, but when I changed the day of the recurring event (Riverside Chats) from the second Tuesday of the month to the first, one event is showing the old date, the next is missing and the third and fourth are showing the wrong time. Tried deleting the event completely and re-doing it but the same issue recurred. Have checked the blog and Google Calendar time zone settings and they are correct.

    Please advise.

  15. The Calendar Time zone setting is correct.

If you go to sanjuanpilots.wordpress.com you'll see 2 upcoming events. If you click on the calendar page you'll see only one.

The event was moved from the 24th to the 31st and your plugin duplicated it instead of moving it.

    Thanks,
    Bryan

  16. Deleted the widget and reinstalled. Still wrong.

  17. when I changed the day of the recurring event (Riverside Chats) from the second Tuesday of the month to the first, one event is showing the old date, the next is missing and the third and fourth are showing the wrong time

@kiiln, could we go over specific examples by copy pasting them from the site? I checked http://kiiln.org/ and I only see one event listed with "Riverside Chats" as the title, and it is listed for the 1st Tuesday in March which seems correct based on your description.

Here is what I see at http://kiiln.org/

    Riverside Chats
    March 4, 2014 at 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Rockefeller Board Room 430 E. 67th Street New York, NY 10065

And here is the corresponding data from the https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/ugdfoo24ce0m4m565r27vqh7u4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics file:

Note that it can take up to an hour or two for event changes to show up on the website because of how they are cached both by your calendar provider and by WordPress.com. Is it possible you just didn't wait long enough before to see the change go through?

  18. @bhhoyer, I went to http://sanjuanpilots.wordpress.com/ and saw the following under Upcoming Events in the widget area:

    1/31 EOM Lunch 11:30 - Ernies
    2/5 Board Meeting
    17:15 - Cask 'n Schooner

However, I noticed that's a text widget and you didn't provide a link to your .ics file and I can't find a link to the .ics file anywhere on your widgets page. If you'd like me to take a closer look, please reply back with a link to the .ics file you are using. Also, keep in mind that it can take up to an hour or so for calendar changes to go through because of how they are cached. If the problem is not with the cache, then I can check it as soon as at least an hour has passed from the time of the last calendar change. What I will want to do is compare what shows up on the site when the upcoming events widget is added compared to the current data in the .ics file. Sorry I didn't catch up to this sooner! I'd be happy to take a look if you can give me some additional specifics.

  19. I removed the plugin widget because I was getting too many complaints about it being wrong,

I have put it back up for troubleshooting.

  20. Thanks! I've taken some screenshots and noted the .ics file location. I checked http://sanjuanpilots.wordpress.com/ again and now I see the following under Upcoming Events in the sidebar:

I also checked https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/ot2e9lo8bcr8rud79everensn8%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics and I found six points of data that match the "EOM Lunch" title. Let's go through them.

I found six different events in the .ics file with the title "EOM Lunch," and this one matches the Jan 24 date:

    42 BEGIN:VEVENT
     43 DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140131T113000
     44 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140131T130000

     54 SUMMARY:EOM Lunch
     55 TRANSP:OPAQUE
     56 END:VEVENT

See how line 47 mentions Jan 24? I don't know why the calendar shows that differently than the widget. Could you try removing the Jan 31 event from the calendar completely and then re-add it and let me know if the Jan 24 event goes away from the widget? (Note we'll need to wait about up to an hour after all the changes are done.)

The next one on the calendar is Jan 31, and that one looks correct to me. It should still be there if you add and remove that one and I think it will fix the Jan 24 issue too.

After that, I see an event for "SJPA Board" on Feb 5 at 5:15pm that is on the calendar but not in the widget. There's only one matching set of data for that title in the current .ics file:

    27 BEGIN:VEVENT
     28 DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140205T171500
     29 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140205T181500

     41 END:VEVENT

On line 30, it looks to me like the "SJPA Board" event is a recurring event that should show up on the first Wednesday of every month but it isn't showing up in the widget. That looks like a bug to me, and I have written up a report on it and sent it to our developers. In the mean time, if you wan't to try to remove that recurring event and add it as a single event for the next few months, that would be a temporary workaround to help with using the widget on your site until the bug report can be reviewed.

I know this is a lot of data :) thanks for your patience! In summary, it looks like the problem in the case of the "SJPA Board" event is something we can look into, and it would be wonderful if you could try the delete and re-add troubleshooting step to fix the Jan 24 "EOM Lunch" problem.

  21. OK I have deleted all of the events and reentered them

  22. All righty. I checked http://sanjuanpilots.wordpress.com/calendar/ again and the Jan 24 event is gone, so that's good. However, I see that there's now a "Board Meeting" event on the calendar starting on Mar 5 but that event isn't in the widget.

This confirms my suspicion that it's a bug with the way recurring events by weekday are displayed.

I've already reported the problem, and now we'll need to wait for the developers to review that.

In the mean time, you should be able to get around the problem by adding the events one at a time instead of as recurring events. If you run into any trouble, I'll do my best to help you by looking through the data in your .ics file and offer advice based on that.

  23. Still broken.
Calendar shows meeting on February but it's not in upcoming events.

I have spent too much time on this plug-in, which has never worked properly. Don't know if it's your plug-in or the Google Calendar Feed.

I'll just disable it and do it by hand.

    sigh,
    Bryan Hoyer

  24. Yes, it's still broken, but only if the events are recurring and only if they're added a certain way. :)

    Sorry for the trouble!

A temporary workaround would be to either add each event individually in the calendar as a one time event or add them by hand as you suggested. That's what you will need to do until the developers have a chance to review the bug report I added based on your feedback. I'm not sure of the timing, so using a workaround is the best temporary solution for now.

Thanks for helping to document the issue. It's really good to have the details from you to include in a bug report. I appreciate that!
