mylostgirlsI am watching a video from Lynda.com and there is a part that talks about the Update Services box within the Writing tab of the Dashboard. I'm on a Mac and I don't have several screens like I see on the PC video but I'm used to that...only I would like to push the search engines to my site by using the update services feature.

Those tutorials are pointing to WordPress.org features that you will not find on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. I suggest you become familiar with the support documentation here http://en.support.wordpress.com as it does apply soley to free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
