I had WP version 2.1 and tried upgrading to 2.31 (or most recent). I now cannot access the control panel. When I try to login I receive a Internal Error 500. I also have random characters in the title and left side bar.
My site is < http://blog.seattle-duiattorney.com/ >. How do I fix this? I made copies of the themes, and plugins folder. I also made copies of the wp-config and wp-config-sample.
This is strictly a public awareness site that makes no money. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

it's a well-known upgrade trouble with 2.3 -- it screws the current default PHP memory limits, then it does not handle this error at all, and therefore it is eventually unable to run an upgrade script properly.
0. did you backup (WXR export) your blog prior to upgrading?
(or have you got a working SQL dump of your database, at the very least?)
1. you may or may not be able to fix the problem by adding the following into your .htaccess file:
php_value memory_limit 16M
otherwise, e-mail your host and ask them to increase the value for you.
2. try to run http://blog.seattle-duiattorney.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php script.
3. if fails see also http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Installation#How_do_you_force_a_database_upgrade.3F
i think you have a self-hosted blog, in which case you have to go to http://wordpress.org/support to place your query. this is the forum for bloggers hosted by wp.com. please correct me if i'm mistaken.

Yes it is a self hosted blog. WordPress.org is not as user friendly as WordPress.com. I also was not aware there was a difference. Thanks for the advice though. :)
