uploading and formatting image

  1. Cannot get image in PDF or JPG format uploaded to my sidebar. I thought I had it uploaded, but there's nothing there and it keeps telling me to format the widget. I have no idea what to do.

You cannot upload any image directly into a sidebar. The easy way to do this is to upload the image into a draft post and then switch to the Text (HTML) editor, copy the code and paste it into a text widget.

  3. 1) PDFs are not image files, and cannot be directly displayed.

    2) The easy way to add a JPG or other image file to your sidebar is the Image widget you already tried. The Image widget requires pasting an image URL. So first you upload the image via Media > Add New and copy the File URL.
Make sure the image is small enough to fit in the sidebar (for the theme you're using, maximum width is 229 pixels).
