Uploading themes from external source

  1. Hi. I had downloaded some external wordpress theme templates but how do I upload and change my blog theme to this? I am not referring to the themes provided in wordpress itself.

The blog I need help with is nickg74.wordpress.com.

  2. Can't do - all the Themes at WordPress.COM have been modified for use here (many Widgets added for more functionality since plug-in's are not allowed here) - the Themes also get a severe scrubbing for security issues.

You need a WordPress.ORG install to use custom Themes (and a new host etc) - you can however do a CSS paid upgrade if you want to change the look of a Theme beyond the standard options (many Themes have custom options to change the look and feel)

  3. There is no DTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs so as auxclass syas we cannot upload and use themes from any other sources. Please see this entry so you are clear on the differences between WordPress.com free hosted blogs and WordPress.org installs for self-hosted sites.

If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

  4. Darn! I made typos above. "There is no DTP acces" should have been "There is no FTP access". Sorry :(

  5. @TT you were right: there is no DTP access to WP.com
But yes, FTP access is more sought-after.

  6. G'day Andrew
    LOL ... :D
