Use of affiliates

  1. Hi there,
My blog has attracted a high amount of traffic and I am starting to think about affiliates. I have been approved affiliates of a couple of businesses. Is this something I can do through WordPress? I am wanting to run their banners on my blog.

    Thanks
    Caitlyn

The blog I need help with is caitlynloves.wordpress.com.

  2. WordPress.com does not permit the use of many affiliate links in blog content.

  3. Basically, no. If you're wanting affiliate and ad income, get a custom domain as soon as possible and then once your traffic has recovered (4 months or so) then you can move off WordPress.com to self-hosted, where you can do what you want.

  4. Okay, thanks! I'm not very tech savvy so I'm wondering ifmoving from WordPress to self-hosted will be too difficult for me?
    Thanks
    Caitlyn

  5. Well, unless you're getting in the realm of 1000 hits a day, it's pointless because you'll spend more in hosting than you will make in affiliate sales.

  6. Ok thanks. So if I create a custom domain, because I'm still with wordpress, I still can't use affiliates?

  7. If you host on wordpress.org then you can use affiliate links and ads.

  8. The Custom Domain and Mapping upgrades get you only that: a custom domain mapped to your blog. There is no upgrade here other than the $2600 per month VIP program that allows affiliate sales, as far as I am aware.

  9. Thanks for all your help- clearly I'm a novice! What do I need to do to change my blog to host on wordpress.org?

  10. You need to investigate paid hosts, choose one, buy hosting, install software from WordPress.org, and then change your domain name to point to your new website instead of the WP.com one. Then you are responsible for your own tech support and upgrades.
