Username change

    Hi!

    I’ve been trying to change my current username iridisma to giorgosandroulidakis. Although I follow your instructions (http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username), I repeatedly get the following error message:

    Sorry, that username already exists.

    I assume this is because, in addition to iridisma.wordpress.com, I have also registered the blog address giorgosandroulidakis.wordpress.com.

    Could you please suggest how I could change my username to giorgosandroulidakis while preserving both blog addresses?

    Hello there,
    I did a search and found a similar thread that Staff replied to here:

    Blog names are the same as usernames for the most part. Usernames can be turned into blog names, but blog names cannot be turned into usernames.

    Thank you for your prompt reply!

    Given the above logical restriction, I’ve thought of the following workaround:

    I could change the blog address giorgosandroulidakis.wordpress.com, e.g. to something like giorgosandroulidakis2.wordpress.com, without permanently disabling it. If and when the username giorgosandroulidakis thus becomes available, I could change my username from iridisma to giorgosandroulidakis and subsequently change the blog address back from giorgosandroulidakis2.wordpress.com to giorgosandroulidakis.wordpress.com.

    However, I'm not quite sure that the username giorgosandroulidakis will become available to me if I discard the blog address giorgosandroulidakis.wordpress.com without disabling it permanently.

    What do you think? Does it make sense?

    Thanks again for being so helpful!

    However, I must admit the issue is still not clear to me.

    When wordpress.com users decide to change a blog/site address, why exactly are they offered the option to permanently disable the older blog/site address or not? The corresponding text next to the checkbox reads:

    Yes, please permanently disable siteaddress.wordpress.com
    If you check this box you will not be able to use siteaddress.wordpress.com again.
    If you think you will reuse this name keep this option unchecked.

    As far as I can tell, this very option and the accompanying explanatory text are in direct contradiction to the Support entries you cited above.

    Any clue?

    It's not clear to me either. When it comes to changing username or blog addresses I'm a nervous nelly. I wouldn't do a thing until I had contacted Staff.
