Using both a custom header and content slider in Widely theme

  1. I would like to use both a custom header and the content slider in Widely theme. But it seems at though you can't do both. Am I wrong? Is it possible with the CSS upgrade? If so, what is the code to make the change? Also, does CSS allow you to add custom social buttons? Can they be put at the top of the page? Thank you.

  2. I see that http://methenmommy.wordpress.com/ is currently using Twenty Eleven. Did you change themes permanently or were you still looking for help with Widely?

    You could probably setup the slider and then attach an image as a background to one of the elements in the header and add padding to give it some space.

    Also, does CSS allow you to add custom social buttons? Can they be put at the top of the page? Thank you.

    Social buttons can be added via a widget and then moved using CSS absolute positioning.

  3. Hi!

    Yes, I switched because that theme wouldn't do both. I do have a few questions about twenty eleven maybe you could answer:

    How do I move menu to right and delete extra white space at top?
    Yellow shadow when you hover over menu? How do I change the color?
    How can I widen the margins (empty one inch on each side)?
    A gray box appears around image when captioned. How do you delete or change the color?

    Thanks!

  4. It sounds like you are looking for a lot of help with designing your site, I can help you get started and point you in the right direction for learning CSS, but you might also consider paying a designer to help you if you'd like to make extensive changes.

    Regarding some of your other questions, I would recommend starting out by getting a better understanding of CSS itself. Here is a good tutorial:

    Some starting points for the rest of your questions to follow...

  5. delete extra white space at top?

    To adjust the spacing in the header, I would recommend uploading a header image that has been properly sized to 1000 pixels by whatever height you want before you upload it on the Appearance → Header page. The space should adjust accordingly.

  6. How do I move menu to right?

    Moving the menu right is a little tricky if you haven't done it before. I bet you want it centered and not right-aligned though. Here is an example that will center the menu in the Twenty Eleven theme:

    #access {
    	text-align: center;
    }
    #access ul {
    	display: inline-block;
    }
  7. Yellow shadow when you hover over menu? How do I change the color?

    Here is a block of CSS used in a previous forum reply that is an example for changing all of the colors in the Twenty Eleven menu. You should leave the font-family rule from this example out for your case:

  8. How can I widen the margins (empty one inch on each side)?

    Keep in mind inches aren't really a good measure on the web. The margins will vary depending on how big the screen is when you view the page. So, think of it in terms of setting a (relatively) fixed size for the main content area, and then the margins will be totally different depending on what size screen each person uses to view the site.

    To clarify, is your real goal to entirely change the width of the main container, including the header?

  9. A gray box appears around image when captioned. How do you delete or change the color?

    This will remove the background color for captioned images:

    .wp-caption {
    	background: none;
    }
  10. Thank you so much for your help!

  11. Hi!

    I'm working with the Widely theme and can't figure out how to get rid of the word "Widely" in the Header to replace it with my business name. Please help =)

  12. The website I'm working on is http://www.Collins-DuPont.com/blog

  13. http://collins-dupont.com/blog/ is using WordPress, but it is not setup here at WordPress.com. See http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ to learn about the differences. You should ask for help at http://wordpress.org/support/
