I am an archivist at a small university, and I would like to if Word Press has the capabilities to host a digital collection. I also would like to know what types of phrases (tags, categories, name of a digital object, etc.) generate search results. In addition, do searchable PDFs work well on Word Press?

No, they don't. If that is what you want, you'll have to get independent hosting and use software from WordPress.ORG. The search function here does not search within uploaded media files.
