Is there a way to have any comments automatically appear directly after the the article without having the reader click on anything to view them?

Not at WordPress.com there isn't. The idea is, if you have more than just a couple, nobody will scroll past them, and everyone will assume they'd somehow landed on the wrong page, rather than your main blog page.
