you know the number next to the post in the dashboard? (next to when, title, categories, etc.). What do the numbers mean? do they have any affect on anything?

A unique number is given to every post however, I'm not really aware of why or how it could be used.

They have no effect. Databases work on numbers - and posts need numbers for that.
