What gets marked as spam?

  1. Hi.

I'm wondering how the system finds spam comments? How can I review them?

The blog I need help with is petterwilmo.wordpress.com.

  2. Spam is controlled by Akismet. Usually there are tell-tale signs about spam, like lots of links, specific keywords, emails, and Akismet determines if a comment is spam or not.

You can also control some things about what gets sent to spam like specific words, emails, IP addresses should be automatically spammed (through the Blacklist). But really you can rely on Akismet to get things right nearly all of the time.

You can see your spam if you go to Comments and then click on spam, which will take you here: https://petterwilmo.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=spam

  3. But the link you sent me to is only where the spam is temporary. How can I check if they truly are spam comments?

  4. I don't really understand. You are wondering about the spam comments that never get shown to you since they are filtered out by Akismet first? You can be pretty sure that these are spam, that's why you don't see them.

Or are you wondering about how to know if the spam comments you are seeing are actually spam?

  5. I'm wondering how to know if the spam comments that get removed, not put in the spam folder, really are spam comments. Sorry, should've explained it better :P

  6. Well I guess you will never know for sure, since you can't see them. But I'm confident that Akismet are handling them correctly, because the ones that do get through are obviously spam, and if there are others they are stopping automatically, they must be damn sure that they are spam, and they are blocking it, since it is the worst spam. Who knows what exactly it is, but you don't have to worry about innocent comments being dragged into the automatic blocking. It's still pretty rare that innocent comments are even marked as spam in the first place (unless of course there are lot's of links or it's really long, but even then, it's not that common)

  7. Yeah, I guess you're right.

Thanks for the help, man ;)

  8. No worries

  9. Try:

Dashboard >> Settings >> Discussion >> Don’t discard spam on old posts

Will keep a lot of junk around -

If Akismet sees the same exact comment 10,000 times on different blogs - probably that is spam -
