A post fits into the archives by default....a "post" is a blog entry. A page is a web page which shows as a link but is not entered into the archives. On my blog....everything apart from the "About Dirk Gently" and "The SPAM WAR email list of shame" are posts. Those two are pages. Look along the top of my header, on this theme...that is where "pages" will show.
