What is this Picture, Gravatar, Avatar or Blavatar or Something else

    How do I change the funky purple picture to something more pleasing that I would like up there. What is this called. I am new to blogging and trying hard to pick it up and learn.

    here's a related question: I uploaded a picture that I thought would "follow me and my posts/comments/replies and questions throughout the WP world" and it doesn't appear anywhere. whassup with that? thanks.

    I uploaded my gravatar. How long does it take to show up in my posts when someone searches for my blog postings on the net?
