When is it worth switching to wordpress.org? (advertising)

  1. So my family started this site to do something together as a hobby. We enjoy nerdy stuff, and have been doing reviews and what not for a few months. We recently hit up a local convention, and generally go to about 3-4 a year. As soon as we posted coverage of the last event, our average hits per day went from 5 to over a 1000. Not sure how long this will keep up, but as we are going to do this a couple time a year, I'm wondering at what point people think it is a good idea to switch to a site that would allow us to advertise/monetize. Any advice? - I know it's a big 'what if' but it was still on my mind. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is 4geekreviews.wordpress.com.

  2. There is an advertising program here at WordPress.com called WordAds. It’s for well established blogs on their own domains, with suitable content and 20,000 - 25,000 page views or more monthly. http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/

  3. moved to Off Topic

  4. @timethief:
Thanks! I'll check that out. It looks like I need to pruchase the domain name proper, but it might be worth it. As my site is a really narrow niche market, I was hoping to get in touch with local advertisers, which is against the service terms (I'm assuming), so any further advice from folks on the subject is appreciated as well.

  5. Well, you can't have an independently-hosted site without purchasing a domain name for it, so factor that into your calculations. I'd say it's not worth going independent for less than a thousand hits a day. YOu need that kind of traffic to generate any real hits.

  6. I guess 1000 - 15000 page views everyday may be the time to consider moving a blog. But do note that there are many who have self hosted WordPress.corg sistes and what income they make over and above web hosting and associated expenses amounts to pocket change.
