When moving to WP.org, what happens to my visitors?

  1. Hello all,

I am planning to move my website from WP.com to WP.org mainly because I would like to place some Google ads on it (WPads were no good).

What I am mostly concerned about is my visitors. Currently I get a lot of traffic on the website, and I don't want to lose them. Assuming I shifted my website as well as its domain somewhere else apart from WP.com, will my visitors will be redirected automatically to the new location?

And what happens to the results of the search engines (like Google). Will Google lose track of my website as well, or it wouldn't even notice?

At the end of the day, the last thing I ever want to hear is that my potential visitors cannot find my site because they were either not redirected properly, or my website didn't show up in Google search results.

    Thanks!
    Max

The blog I need help with is maxembedded.com.

  2. Provided you have installed and activated the JetPack plugin http://jetpack.me on your WordPress.org install, and you post the relevant URL(s) into a forum thread, Staff will do the transfer of both subscribers and stats for you. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/#wordpress-com-to-self-hosted-site Do that now please as I have tagged this thread for their attention.

  4. Hello timethief,
Thanks for your response. I'll do that soon.

What I am concerned about is my visitors and not the subscribers.
If I move my website to WP.org, will WP.com automatically redirect any visitors to the new location? Also, will it affect the way my site has been indexed by various search engines like Google? For instance, for certain keywords, my website shows up in the first page of Google search results. If I move my website, will it still show up there or will Google lose the index, or probably try to re-index differently?

    Do I make some sense?

    Thanks.

  5. If you have a custom domain, nothing will happen to your visitors except a temporary (3-4 month) depression in Google visits.

  6. How about if I take the site redirection upgrade of WP.com. Would it still affect?

  7. There are plugins for your self-hosted site that can help you improve search engine optimization, for example: https://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/

If you keep the same permalink structure (http://domain/date/postname/) on your self-hosted the Google search results won't break.

  8. Okay, thanks kardotim. I'll give that a try, but could take a while. Thank you.
