When will the Discussion Settings be restored?

  1. I need to be able to accept comments with a name and email address without having to log in with any kind of ID--Facebook, Twitter, or WordPress. I have friends who don't have any of those, or are confused by the whole process. A friend of mine has a WordPress blog and I commented on it today with just a name and an email address--no logging in. There's an option for that in the Discussion Settings, but it's not working. As a consequence, I'm getting Likes and Follows but no Comments--except for one friend who must've sneaked in on the day the settings were working.

  2. There is no restoration planned. You can read about the Recent Update to Comments here > http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/recent-update-to-commenting?replies=4

    There's more here as well:

There is quite a bit of speculation here, and while I can't address every single point, I'd like to point out that one of the many reasons behind this change was to provide greater control over your own identity within comments at WordPress.com.

Anyone who knows your email address could have easily linked their comment to your account in a way that was indistinguishable from you leaving it, and you would have no way of knowing it or stopping them. Now comments linked to your account are always going to be from you. ... read more > http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/you-must-be-logged-in-to-comment/page/11?replies=327#post-852388

Please confirm that you have renoved the checkmark from these settings > Settings Discussion
    Other comment settings
_ Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

If you wish you can publish a post instructing your readers to ignore the emaill address prompt and not enter one.

  4. Yes, I have removed the checkmark from those two settings. It makes no difference.
I have considered instructing my readers to not enter an email address. But . . . how will winners of giveaways send me their mailing address? I was planning to email them and let them send their mailing address in a reply to my email. I don't want to give out my email address on the blog for them to contact me. Do you see my dilemma? . . . Do WordPress technicians see these forum posts?

  5. But . . . how will winners of giveaways send me their mailing address? ... I don't want to give out my email address on the blog for them to contact me.

You can create a secure contact form for this purpose.

  6. You have made my day! Thank you so much, timethief.

  7. You're welcome and best wishes for happy blogging. :)
