have setup a google plus account linked to google places, there is an option "help people discover your page", a string of text code is then supplied. i am trying to find where to insert that into my wordpress site, but cant find it. can someone help?

That's just a simple HTML link, and you can put it in a text widget.

by putting it in the text widget will that have the same effect as putting it in a header?
Yes, it's just a link. It doesn't "do" anything.
