The New Sharing Options Thread

  1. Trying to do one for Yahoo buzz but am having no luck whatsoever.

  2. Hi all, first off great news about the new Facebook share button - i've waited ages for this! However, I have a small problem with it..

When a user hits the Facebook share on one of my posts, the default image which shows (to be shared on Facebook) is one of my email icons from the site furniture (?!), not the main image from the post. The user can scroll through image options to select the blog image, but, im guessing not many people will do this and if they do - it's annoying to have to do it. The share button should default to the blog image it is sharing right?

Does anyone know why this is happening and how i can change it so that the default image when shared on Facebook is 1) either that of the post or 2) An image i have already specified (i.e blog header)?

The same happens when you post the link of a post within Facebook to share - the email icon pops up...

Thanks in advance for any help

    Ryan

As far as I know, Facebook is what chooses which images are shown and in what order - it's every image over a certain original size.

I'll check to see if it's possible for us to influence this in any way.

Are there specifications for the service anywhere? A link?

I like Sharing--Twitter and Email work pretty well--but Print isn't what I hoped it would be. I'd like readers to be able to print just the post itself, not the links to every page on my blog, to every category I use (not just the ones attached to the post), and to every entry in every widget (blogroll, recent posts, recent comments, RSS feeds, Weather Widget, Flickr widget . . . you get the idea). Still, we have forward momentum. That's good.

  6. Hiya This is Yahoo buzz link http://buzz.yahoo.com/

    Hope that helps

  7. May be you can work with this service to enhance the print functionality for WP.com blogs?

I agree with @accessiblenorth above, the print button is not very effective.

big thanx for this new tool folks. love your work.

one thing i thought i might flag, it seems to be doubling up on many photo pages on my inuit types theme eg:

  9. LOVE the share button.

Question: Can we WordPressers get just a little greedy and have the Facebook SHARE button AND the Facebook LIKE button present at the same time, as opposed to having to make a choice between the two? Please? :-)

  10. I am completely confused as to how this works. I enabled the buttons on my blog and then attempted to click on one (I don't remember which) and it brought me up to what looked like my posting screen with a hyperlink to the post. I closed out of it and did not save, I was just curious what others would be seeing. But then when I went to my blog stats I had several shares for various different sharing methods. I am a very new blogger and do not have a large viewership so I can't imagine that it would have jumped from nothing to 14 that quickly. What am I missing?

    Thanks!

I love this new feature -- thanks so much for providing it.

I'm having trouble understanding the share stats, though. Basically, the stats on my blog seem a little inflated. For example, there are six shares (3 Facebook, 3 Digg) for this post, even though that post didn't get any visits today and is old enough that it's no longer visible on my blog's home page (and also, a search on Digg didn't turn up any mention of that page). Can you please explain how the stats are calculated? Is it possible that enabling mShots previews somehow confuses the stats collector into thinking that a share button has been clicked on?

  12. I read that "If you have the custom CSS upgrade you can go even further and choose your own icons and layout". I have the custom CSS upgrade but can't figure it out?!

  13. It seems to be doubling up on many photo pages on my inuit types theme.

I just took a look at your site and it appears to be working a-OK right now; are you still seeing this? If so, can you please contact us at Support?

Question: Can we WordPressers get just a little greedy and have the Facebook SHARE button AND the Facebook LIKE button present at the same time, as opposed to having to make a choice between the two?

I'll pass that along. FYI, Facebook is currently strongly encouraging people to use the Like button instead of the Share button.

I enabled the buttons on my blog and then attempted to click on one (I don't remember which) and it brought me up to what looked like my posting screen with a hyperlink to the post.

Was it the Press This button? Press This does exactly that and you can even use it as a bookmarklet anywhere on the Web: http://en.support.wordpress.com/press-this/

That's a question more for the CSS Customization forum, which you can find here.

  14. Markel,

Thanks for being patient with all of us and providing us with so much information! My question was really more in line with jpearlman's question, their's was explained much better than mine though.

Also, is there any way to find out who or which blog we are being shared by?

  15. Thanks for being patient with all of us and providing us with so much information!

    You're welcome!

Also, is there any way to find out who or which blog we are being shared by?

For the various social networking services, you can sometimes figure this out using their services. For example, if you're using the "smart" Tweet button, click on the number of shares next to the button and it'll run a search on Twitter for your post URL, like this result on the WordPress.com blog post announcing the sharing feature.

For Press This, if someone uses it to repost and they keep the link that's provided intact, you should receive a pingback notification, which will show up in your comments. It will include a link back to the article that links to yours. You can read more about pingbacks here.

  16. what is the css code for editing the share buttons and text. i am using Black Letterhead theme!

I have added both an Email and Print buttons, but when I click on the Email button nothing happens. Do I need to configure some other feature? What should happen when a user clicks this button?

  18. My blog has a mix of photgraphs and text and I don't want the new sharing buttons to appear on the photographs, so I've followed the Support instructions -

"You can disable the sharing option on specific posts or pages by using the checkbox at the bottom of the edit page"

ALL my checkboxes are unticked and yet the share buttons (which I want only on text posts) are appearing on all posts. Can you help please?

  19. Question: Is there a way to move the share toolbar to the top of the posts and pages?

We just fixed this; can you please check? You should see a pop-up with a captcha when you click on the Email share button.

    We're looking into this.

Is there a way to move the share toolbar to the top of the posts and pages?

    Not at the present time.

    Thank you WordPress!

  22. @Markel

The sharing feature is amazing. Thank you very much!

Would it be possible (it's been on my wish list for a while now) to include a page view share? It would great to show how many hits a page has been visited to-date.

Loving the work you've done, but I'm clicking the "smart" option for the Digg button and still only getting the regular button. This a glitch, or am I missing something?

I am very pleased about the new sharing options, but I have a problem: they do not show anymore, neither on the posts or on the index page. When I enabled the service yesterday, it worked fine. Today, all of a sudden, it does not work. I have tried to save the settings several more times, but with no effect. Any ideas?

The service just returned, so please ignore (or delete) my previous post at 10:53.

  26. Loving the work you've done, but I'm clicking the "smart" option for the Digg button and still only getting the regular button. This a glitch, or am I missing something?

We're seeing some errors from Digg when the button is being called; we're looking into it but it appears Digg will have to get their buttons back up and running.

  27. Would it be possible (it's been on my wish list for a while now) to include a page view share? It would great to show how many hits a page has been visited to-date.

Could you explain what you mean by a "page view share"?

  28. Markel, by "Page View Share" I mean a button that displays the number of hits or page views that particular post has received. Real-time or static stats I guess doesn't really matter as long there is an option to do so. Presently, we need to visit blog stats and then click on the stats icon in order to get a graphical view.

29. The options for disabling the sharing options do not seem to appear for pages. It works perfectly for posts but the option to remove them isn't there for pages.

  30. Got all my share buttons up and running but am clueless (despite the instructions) about how to add more -- like delicious, buzz, and technorati. I have no idea where to get the info (sharing and icon URLs) to put in to add each one. It would be a huge assist if WP would either list the appropriate info for all these other buttons, or better, just add them to the group of drag-and-drop buttons already provided.
