In WordPress' Terms of Service, they say:
"By submitting Content to Automattic for inclusion on your Website, you grant Automattic a world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting your blog."
So they can freely use your content to promote WordPress. Great. But do I actually own what I write, or does WordPress? Anybody know?

As long as the content is original, written by you, then you own it and hold the copyright. Any stuff you use in your posts (cites and quotes) that is copyrighted by others, remains the property of the original copyright owner.
It says "solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting YOUR BLOG." Not WP.com.
You own the copyright and moral rights on anything you create. That clause gives WordPress.com permission to publish your blog (which we need because you are the copyright holder). "Promoting" your blog covers things like tag pages and search engines.
